We travel throughout Topsham, Exmouth and Crediton for Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Gujarati and Tamil weddings, at home in temples, gurdwaras, mosques and banqueting suites alike. We keep our distance during the most solemn moments and step in only for the joyful ones.

We arrive knowing the difference between a Gujarati pithi and a Punjabi maiyan, so nobody has to stop and explain their own traditions to us on the day. For the jaimala and the joota chupai we stay close to the fun, because these lighter rituals carry as much of the family's character as the solemn ones. We photograph the sacred and the joyful with equal care, the vows as faithfully as the bhangra.

Every Blessing, Every Vow, Every Farewell

At a Hindu wedding, the pheras around the sacred fire seal the marriage, and we capture them close. In the gurdwara, the couple circle the Guru Granth Sahib through the four laavan, and we follow that slow procession with the reverence the moment asks for. At a Muslim nikah we photograph the vows, the mehr and the joyful moment the couple are declared married.

Preparations hold a quiet anticipation of their own, and we photograph the jewellery, the tying of the turban and the last still moments before the day begins. Each pre-wedding event carries its own mood, the intimacy of the mehndi, the play of the haldi, the exuberance of the sangeet, and we photograph all three in their own key. We capture the lively baraat as the groom arrives, with the dhol, the dancing and the milni.
