We are as at ease in a small community temple as in a five-hundred-cover banqueting suite, throughout Cathays, Grangetown and Riverside and the rest of South Wales. The garland exchange, when bride and groom raise the jaimala over one another, releases the first great cheer of the day, and we catch it as it breaks.

The food, the decor and the small details matter to us, so between the big set pieces we quietly gather the textures that make your day yours. When the baraat arrives with drums and dancing we are in the thick of it, moving with the crowd so the welcome looks and feels exactly as loud as it was. For the jaimala and the joota chupai we stay close to the fun, because these lighter rituals carry as much of the family's character as the solemn ones.

We travel across South Wales for weddings of every tradition, and Cardiff is the Welsh capital, with a diverse community and grand venues, which makes it a straightforward and welcome destination. For relaxed couple photographs, we like Bute Park, around 130 acres of landscaped parkland behind Cardiff Castle, and Roath Park with its lake, and Cardiff Castle, a medieval castle and Victorian Gothic revival mansion in the city centre gives the day a strong sense of Cardiff.

We are ready for the giving of the sindoor and the tying of the mangalsutra at a Hindu ceremony. For Tamil and South Indian families, the muhurtham reaches its heart as the thali is tied, and we are in position for that single, defining second. The muhurat and muhurtham, the auspicious hours, set the pace of the ceremony, and we plan around them.

The mehndi night, the sangeet and the haldi each carry their own mood, and we photograph them all. The dhol player sets the pulse of the baraat, and we work close to the drum and the dancers so the picture carries the sound within it. Each pre-wedding event carries its own mood, the intimacy of the mehndi, the play of the haldi, the exuberance of the sangeet, and we photograph all three in their own key.
