Paperwork lies flat under whatever the ceiling gives, often a downlight straight above it, which fills eye sockets with shadow and renders the nikah-nama a blank white rectangle. We take it from the side, expose for the ink, and photograph the witnesses singly instead of herding them into one frame. A walima is then a separate commission altogether: an evening that is lit, long, and expecting a camera at every table.
