Multi-day Muslim weddings are a speciality in Cardiff, from the pre-wedding mehndi and dholki to the baraat, the nikah, the rukhsati and the walima afterwards. Judging light in a hall you have never entered before is a skill built over hundreds of unfamiliar rooms, and it is why an unknown venue costs us minutes rather than hours. Spread through Canton, Roath and Llandaff, Cardiff's Muslim families give a nikah here a citywide reach, and Cardiff Central sits a short walk from the castle for guests arriving by train. Lighting is the second question here. The first is how the space is arranged, and specifically whether men and women sit apart and along which line, because that determines how big a team you need, the sex of whoever covers each side, the focal lengths in the bag and whether either of us may cross at all. It cannot be worked out on the day either; by then the room is full and the decision needed to have been taken already.

So it gets settled in writing beforehand, with you and with whoever is leading. Which side may be photographed. Who may appear in a delivered file and who may not. What becomes of a frame somebody wandered into. Two families often turn up with two different thresholds, and the reason for asking months out is that nobody should have to refuse the camera with a full room watching.

The ceremony runs short and nearly motionless, which inverts the usual problem: there is no action to follow, only attention to read. What matters sits in faces, in a parent watching, in the pause before qubool is spoken. That calls for reach and silence rather than movement. We settle a standing position with the imam in advance and hold it, because a photographer who shifts during a quiet ceremony is heard before being seen.

The signing afterwards is a table problem. Paperwork lies flat under whatever the ceiling gives, often a downlight straight above it, which fills eye sockets with shadow and renders the nikah-nama a blank white rectangle. We take it from the side, expose for the ink, and photograph the witnesses singly instead of herding them into one frame. A walima is then a separate commission altogether: an evening that is lit, long, and expecting a camera at every table.

No. Two buildings is ordinary here. What it costs you is time rather than travel, so budget the move honestly, tell us which building loses its light first, and let the couple portraits happen before the second venue instead of after.

Hours, the number of photographers, whether one of them needs to be female, and how much of Cardiff the day moves across. Album and print choices sit apart from that, so those can wait until you have seen the pictures.

How do you photograph the nikah ceremony?+

From one position agreed with the imam, which we then do not leave. Reach substitutes for proximity. We ask for nothing, repeat nothing, and photograph none of whatever that conversation ruled out.

Some of our guests would rather not be photographed. How do you respect that?+

Tell us who, and we will know their faces before the morning starts. They stay out of frame rather than being edited out later, which is far more reliable, and no delivered file goes near social media without your say-so.

Do you ask for a deposit to hold our wedding date?+

We do. Dates are held on a first-paid basis rather than a first-enquiry basis, so an unpaid date remains available to the next couple who ask for it. Whatever you pay up front is credited against the balance.
