Sikh weddings in Cardiff, morning and evening

In Cardiff a Sikh wedding amounts to two commissions on one invoice. The morning is a congregation's, in a building arranged for worship rather than for photography, where the sightlines, the floor and the available light were all settled long before anyone booked us. Our work there is to fit inside what exists and go unnoticed doing it. Nothing gets moved and nothing gets added, so the coverage is built out of position and patience.

The evening inverts all of that. A hotel suite or a function room behind a stand is sold as blank space, which means every visual decision inside it is yours and has to be taken well in advance. Ask what the ceiling above you is, because bounced light has to come off something. Ask when the room is released to you. The seam is easy to underestimate, because the daylight will have gone by then and the gap eats the portraits unless somebody protects it.

One measurement governs everything in the hall: the congregation sits, so faces sit too, and the whole room reads at knee height. A photographer upright in that space collects crowns and parting lines, and worse, becomes the only vertical thing moving. We settle onto the carpet as well and pick two or three fixed positions before people arrive, then hold them until nobody registers us any more. Reach comes from focal length rather than from walking about, and the wide frames are taken from a corner nobody is using.

Reading precedes singing for all four laavan, and the couple circle after every one, which hands us four passes of a single walk and four chances to make them differ. The palla joining them is a detail families treasure and the easiest thing to lose from head height. We ask the granthi what the Guru Granth Sahib requires of us, and we ask it long before the morning itself. By the doli everybody is outside, under daylight that matches nothing we metered indoors.

What if you have never worked at our gurdwara before?+

Then we arrive early and ask. The granthi, or whoever holds the committee's authority, will mark out our permitted ground and the rest of it, and that conversation takes ten minutes. Every hall differs, so we would ask that question anywhere.

Will you photograph the maiyan, jago and choora ceremony in Cardiff too?+

Yes, and those evenings often turn out to be the warmest part of the week. They happen in houses and community halls with low ceilings and mixed bulbs, so we shoot close, on fast glass, and keep Cardiff looking like the room it actually was.

How do you work alongside dhol players?+

Loudly, and out of their way. Dhol players work a circle and back into it without looking, so we stay outside the arc and shoot along it. Earplugs, a shutter set to stop the sticks, and no flash into anyone's eyes.

Do you stay from the morning right through to the end of the night?+

Yes. A day beginning before dawn and ending after midnight is one booking rather than two, and we do not hand over to a second shift halfway. The same pair of us covers the morning and the last dance.

Can our parents order their own albums or prints?+

Yes. Parents order straight from the same gallery, at whatever size they want, and pay for their own. We hold the files for years, so a reprint asked for long afterwards is routine rather than awkward.
