Swansea is roughly 150 miles from our studio, so we travel from Northwood; travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book. We would be in position before the palla is placed, since the scarf passes from father to daughter only once. Across several days we would cover the maiyan and mehndi, the baraat, the four laavan at the gurdwara, the doli and a reception, perhaps at Parc-Le-Breos near Parkmill, an exclusive-use house with lawns shaped to take large marquees. A second photographer can be added, briefed beforehand on the maryada of the hall and the order of the anand karaj, so both sides of the darbar hall are covered. Engagement portraits before the wedding, a second photographer on the day and a fine art album afterwards round out the package, and we are glad to travel from London to South Wales and beyond for it.

Kirtan and the four laavan set the pace of an anand karaj, and no camera should ever sit in front of the Guru Granth Sahib or rise above the sangat. Shoes off and head covered, I would work from the edges of the darbar hall and leave the ardas entirely untouched. Afterwards, Oxwich Bay Hotel or the National Waterfront Museum could hold the langar and the reception. Milni, choora and kalire photograph best in close frames, and the doli would carry the coast behind it.

Gurdwara first, then a Swansea reception

The building hosting your anand karaj has habits older than your booking. Nothing about that hall bends for a photographer, and it should not. What you actually choose there is narrow: a lens, a corner, and how quietly you can move between the two. Swansea puts weather into the centre of that plan: bright one hour, blown flat the next, and any outdoor stretch of the day has to survive both.

A reception is the other job, a room where nearly every variable remains yours. Weddings lose pictures at the join between those two, not inside either of them. Guests scatter, cars get found, and daylight has shifted before the group is whole again. Options nearby include Oldwalls Gower, National Waterfront Museum, Brangwyn Hall and Oxwich Bay Hotel. A room out of town buys quiet and costs daylight; a room in the centre reverses that, and the doli lands differently in each case.

From milni to doli on a Swansea Sikh wedding morning

Mehndi and jago nights beforehand are loud, coloured and close, wanting a different lens altogether. Morning coverage starts with milni outside, which is handshakes, garlands and a crowd that will not hold still. Shoes and headscarves are a given rather than a concession, and our working height never rises above seated shoulders. Once inside, the walls of the darbar hall are our working position, low and unhurried, and ardas is left completely alone. Kirtan sets the pace. Four laavan follow, and roaming during them is not an option.

A single sightline is chosen beforehand and held, because movement there costs more than a frame is worth. With palla held between them the couple move slowly, the one mercy this hour grants a photographer. Langar afterwards photographs like a kitchen and a queue, and both are worth having. The doli ends it, and a coast behind that car does the picture no harm at all.

Our families are huge. Can you photograph groups of fifty or more people?+

Fifty faces is a question of depth rather than width. Three shallow rows, level footing, the lens stopped down, and everybody stays sharp. A straight-on angle matters more than the headcount does.

Will you stay to photograph the doli?+

Yes. That is why a final hour of coverage exists at all. We stay through the goodbyes and the car, which run later than most schedules claim, and waiting beats packing early.

Do we get high-resolution files and the right to print them?+

Both, yes. Full-size edited files reach you with a personal printing licence attached, so albums, enlargements and copies for relatives are all yours to order from whoever you prefer.

Our reception is at a different venue from the gurdwara. Is that a problem?+

No, it is normal. It turns into a problem only when nobody budgets the move itself. Tell us how long that move takes and portraits get placed inside it instead of borrowed from dinner.

Can you handle a Sikh wedding with six hundred guests?+

Yes. Past a certain size a wedding stops being one event and becomes several rooms running at once. We decide in advance which room matters when, rather than arriving late everywhere in Swansea.
