Our task through that half of the morning is to read what exists and occupy the positions it leaves us, without fuss, from the back and from the sides.
The second half is the opposite. A reception room is a blank you fill in: the colour of the light, the direction the top table looks, whether dancing sits under something or out in the open. Milni is outdoors, in daylight, with two families meeting in the open and nobody certain which embrace comes next. Of everything scheduled it is the least predictable, and the easiest to end up standing behind. The anand karaj that follows reverses those conditions completely: seated, quiet, slow, worked almost entirely on light the hall was already holding. Nobody announces the transition either. The singing carries on and the day has quietly moved, which is one reason we watch the ragis about as closely as we watch the couple.
Four circuits accompany the laavan. What makes them legible in a photograph is the palla: follow the cloth and the sequence explains itself without a caption underneath. The doli is the day's other hinge. Nobody stages it as a performance and lighting it like one would be wrong, so we retreat, lengthen the lens, and give the family room to gather round the car with nobody's camera among them. Langar afterwards is where photographs stop being formal, and we would sooner sit through it than break off to eat somewhere else.
