A Bristol Sikh wedding, hall to reception room
Treat a Bristol wedding as two commissions with a road journey wedged between. Inside the hall no part of the light belongs to you. Window positions are not negotiable, the lamps run on whatever circuit the committee put in, and the vantage you are offered is low, close to the carpet and fixed. That makes it a planning decision: pick the single position you will hold all morning, because standing up to try another one is not available.
After that the job inverts. Larger reception venues such as Berwick Lodge, about 25 minutes from central Bristol, sit outside the city, and the transfer eats daylight nobody budgeted for. Anything you want outdoors has to happen wherever the sun still is when you get there, which in November is neither building. Ask how early you may enter the reception room, then build the group list backwards from sunset rather than from the meal.

Milni, laavan and doli: the shape of the day
Milni takes place outdoors, pair by pair, usually on tarmac beneath a flat sky, and who greets whom gets settled minutes before anyone lines up. We work from behind that line, not opposite it, since the expressions worth having belong to the men being received. Nothing in that hall outranks the Guru Granth Sahib, which converts, in camera terms, into a ceiling on lens height and a line on the floor that is not crossed.
The palla is placed into the groom's hand and the four laavan carry the couple round, each circuit ending with a bow that arrives at the same spot. Photographing four rounds identically is a failure of nerve, so we change what surrounds them instead: sangat, the musicians, one grandmother. Langar afterwards gets less coverage than any other hour and is often the warmest. The doli empties the building at the end, and nobody has ever rehearsed that.

We travel from Northwood; travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.

We stop moving. The ardas is the moment when a photographer crossing the carpet becomes the loudest object in the hall, so we take a position before it begins, stand with everyone else, and shoot from there or not at all.
Yes. A morning-only booking starts at arrival, takes in the anand karaj, closes once langar is done and stops there. It suits couples whose evening is small, held weeks later, or already being covered by somebody in the family.
Once both venues are confirmed, which is usually the point when the date stops moving. Saturdays in summer go first and the gurdwara diary usually settles before the reception one, so tell us the morning date even if the evening is unresolved.
We do not sell coverage by the hour. We settle on when to begin and when to stop around your actual day, and a Sikh wedding day normally reaches from the groom's house in the morning to the dancing at night.
Yes. Jago earns the extra evening. It runs at night, outdoors or in somebody's front room, lit by a decorated pot and whatever the street provides, a wholly different technical problem from the hall. Tell us the location in advance.
