Studio pet portraits vs a shoot on your favourite walk

The best setting depends entirely on your pet. A studio pet portrait is done in our calm, natural-light Northwood studio, with clean backgrounds and controlled light, so it suits composed companions, older dogs, cats and small animals, and gives you timeless images whatever the weather. An on-location session happens outdoors on a walk your pet already knows and loves, a local park or patch of woodland, which is perfect for energetic dogs who relax the moment they are off the lead and in a familiar place. Both produce beautiful, characterful results, and both are led entirely by your animal's temperament rather than a rigid plan. If you are unsure, tell us about your pet and we will recommend the setting that will get the calmest, happiest expressions. You can see examples of both in our gallery.

Photographing dogs, cats and other animals calmly

The secret to a good animal portrait is not making the animal perform, it is patience, timing and reading their mood. With dogs we use treats, familiar toys and their own name to catch that head tilt and bright-eyed look, working quickly when the expression is right rather than asking them to hold a pose. Cats are photographed on their own terms, usually somewhere they feel secure, so they stay curious rather than hiding. Rabbits, small furries, horses and ponies each get an approach that suits them, and we are used to nervous, elderly and rescue animals who need extra time to trust a new face and a camera. Nothing is forced, and we never keep going once a pet has had enough. That calm, unhurried manner is exactly why owners across London trust us with their companions.

How it works

How a pet session works and what to bring

A pet session is a short, relaxed shoot of around 45 minutes to an hour, in the studio or on a local walk, planned around when your pet is at their best. We start with a quick chat to learn their personality, quirks and any triggers, then keep the session gentle and playful so the natural moments happen on their own. It helps enormously to bring the things your pet loves: their favourite treats, a squeaky toy or ball, a familiar blanket, and a lead and towel for muddy outdoor shoots. Come when they are a little hungry so treats work their magic, and after some exercise if they are a bouncy breed. A calm second person to hold and reassure them is always welcome. Just tell us about your companion via our contact page and we will plan the rest around them.

Turning your pet's portrait into wall art and gifts

A great pet portrait deserves to be seen, not left on a phone. A week or two after the shoot you receive a private online gallery of edited images to choose from, and we help you turn your favourites into something lasting. Options include fine-art prints, framed wall art, gallery-wrapped canvases and desk pieces, all produced to a professional standard so the colours, fur and character of your companion are shown at their best. A portrait of a much-loved dog or cat also makes a genuinely special gift, for a partner, a child or grandparents, and many owners commission one to remember a pet in their later years. Not at all. Lively dogs often photograph best outdoors on a familiar walk. We are patient, work to your pet's pace, and use treats to capture those perfect expressions.

Yes. Pets and their people make wonderful portraits, and we are happy to combine a pet shoot with a family session.

Dogs and cats are the most popular by far, but we also photograph rabbits, guinea pigs, small furries, horses and ponies, and the occasional bird or reptile. If you have an unusual companion, just tell us about them and we will plan the right approach, indoors or out.

Allow around 45 minutes to an hour. That is usually plenty of time to let your pet settle, warm up and give us those relaxed, characterful expressions, without asking an animal to concentrate for longer than is comfortable. We work quickly when the moment is right and never drag things out.

A week or two after the shoot you receive a private online gallery of edited images to choose from. From there we can produce fine-art prints, framed wall art, canvases and photo gifts, so your favourite portrait ends up on the wall rather than lost on a phone.

Yes, and multi-pet portraits are some of our favourites. Two dogs, a dog and a cat, or a whole houseful all work well. We simply allow a little extra time and patience to get everyone looking the right way at the same moment, and are happy to photograph them individually too.
