Only the open lawns give an animal with sound recall room to be released properly, and a dog photographed at a run looks like itself in a way a seated dog seldom does. The formal gardens suit anything that pulls, because the planting and clipped edges act as a boundary and a long line can be run out along a path without vanishing into a hedge. Coat colour settles the exposure before light enters the argument. A clipped hedge is unbroken, even green with no bright patches inside it, and that makes it forgiving behind a dark animal, whose face otherwise sits several stops under sunlit grass and prints as a silhouette with nothing readable inside. A pale dog has the opposite difficulty on the same lawn at noon, when the upper coat burns out and the fur stops carrying any texture. A public park with a gallery inside it is not a private field, so the lead question gets answered before we set out, not once everybody is already standing on the grass. Anxious animals and stiff old ones do better photographed at home, where the ground is known, the exits are familiar and nobody has to negotiate anything strange on the way in.
