The lie of the land

Five boroughs between the Lea and the Roding

On this page East London means five boroughs: Hackney, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Redbridge. Hackney is the closest to Northwood at about 16 miles, Waltham Forest and Tower Hamlets follow at about 17, and Newham and Redbridge sit just under the 20-mile mark. Hackney Marshes and the Lee Navigation towpath run along the western side of the Lea valley, and Here East sits on the Hackney edge of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, with Newham beyond it.

Each borough has its own character. Tower Hamlets holds the Tower of London, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, and the office towers of Canary Wharf on the Isle of Dogs. Newham has the Royal Docks, the largest enclosed docks in the world until they closed to commercial traffic in 1981, and the London Stadium. Waltham Forest reaches north to Chingford and the edge of Epping Forest, while Redbridge takes its name from a red-brick bridge over the River Roding that was demolished in 1921.

Rail ties the area together, which matters for guests and staff alike. Stratford station is served by the Underground, the Overground, the DLR, the Elizabeth line and National Rail, and is ranked the seventh busiest railway station in Britain. Walthamstow Central is the northern end of the Victoria line, Forest Gate and Ilford have Elizabeth line trains, and Canary Wharf brings the Jubilee line, the Elizabeth line and the DLR together.

How it works here

Sessions at your door, from E8 to IG1

For family, newborn, maternity, couples, pet and business sessions, Kaushik comes to you. That might be your living room in Leyton, a garden in Woodford, a park near your flat in Mile End or your office at Canary Wharf. Staying somewhere familiar helps small children, older relatives and nervous dogs settle, and nobody has to pack up a family for a long journey west.

If you would rather come to us, the studio at 21 Joel Street in Northwood Hills is two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line. From East London that is a longer trip, so a session at home or in a park nearby is usually simpler, but the option is there for anyone who wants a plain backdrop and a controlled room.

Session prices are given on request by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383, and wedding photography starts from £750 with packages built around your day. Whichever borough you are in, travel from Northwood to your East London address is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book.

Town halls, galleries and dockside rooms for East London weddings

Every borough here runs its own council ceremony rooms. Hackney's is the Lanchester Suite at Hackney Town Hall, a green-walled, wood-panelled room for up to 30 people. Waltham Forest marries couples at Fellowship Square, Waltham Forest Town Hall, where the Fellowship Civic Chamber holds up to 145. Tower Hamlets Register Office is at St George's Town Hall on Cable Street, Newham's is at East Ham Town Hall, and Redbridge holds its ceremonies at Redbridge Town Hall in Ilford.

Beyond the town halls, the licensed venue lists take in galleries, museum rooms, Victorian and art deco halls, hotels, rooms beside the water and large banqueting suites. That range suits a ten-guest ceremony as well as a wedding week with several hundred guests. Read the East London wedding guide for planning, or the East London Asian wedding page for the mehndi, nikah, anand karaj and pheras.

Family photography at home or in an East London park

Family sessions happen where you live. That can be your garden, Mudchute Park and Farm with its working farm of more than 100 animals, Tumbling Bay Playground in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, or Leyton Jubilee Park with its avenue of century-old plane trees. Kaushik keeps it relaxed and follows the children's lead. See the East London family page for more parks.

Newborn photography at home in East London

Newborn sessions work best at home, with the room kept warm and the baby fed and settled before any posing starts. You stay in familiar surroundings, and nobody has to cross the city with a new baby and a car seat. Siblings can join at the start while they are fresh. The East London newborn page explains timing and safety.

Headshots and corporate headshots are taken in your office or a nearby meeting room. Portrait photography at East London landmarks

Portraits for individuals, graduates and personal branding can be taken by Christ Church Spitalfields, at the House Mill at Three Mills, or on the riverside at Island Gardens, looking across the Thames to the Greenwich view Canaletto painted. A park near home works just as well. Read more on the East London portrait page.

Events, birthdays and christenings in East London

Event photography covers birthdays, anniversaries, christenings, community celebrations and corporate events in halls, restaurants and homes in all five boroughs. Kaushik works quietly through the room, photographing the speeches, the guests and the details. For an East London event, edited highlights typically arrive within a few working days. Dog and pet photography in East London parks

Pet sessions depend on the park rules. Hackney's dog-control order keeps dogs out of children's play areas and marked dog-free areas, Ridgeway Park in Chingford needs a lead, and Waltham Forest allows off-lead walking in places such as Ainslie Wood and part of Lloyd Park. A garden avoids all of that. See pet photography in East London.
