Register offices

Five council ceremony rooms, five very different sizes

Each East London borough runs its own ceremony rooms, and their sizes vary more than couples expect. Waltham Forest has the widest choice at Fellowship Square, Waltham Forest Town Hall on Forest Road: the Strawberry Suite with William Morris interiors takes up to 12, the Lodberry Suite up to 60 and the Fellowship Civic Chamber up to 145. The Grade II listed building also gives a formal setting for the group photographs outside.

Hackney's Lanchester Suite at Hackney Town Hall is green-walled and wood-panelled and holds up to 30, a number that counts the two witnesses, children and the photographer. Redbridge's Elizabeth Suite at Redbridge Town Hall in Ilford also holds up to 30 including photographers, while its ground-floor Roding Room takes only four. With rooms that size, tell us early how many guests are coming so the photographs fit the space.

Newham ceremonies take place at East Ham Town Hall on Barking Road, in the register office or in the Old Court Room, which holds up to 50 on weekdays and up to 80 at weekends by arrangement. Tower Hamlets Register Office is at St George's Town Hall on Cable Street, close to Shadwell DLR and Windrush line stations, which helps guests arriving without a car.

Giving notice

Where to give notice and book registrars in each borough

The paperwork starts with a notice of marriage at the register office. In Waltham Forest, notices are given at the register office in Walthamstow Central Library on the High Street, with a second office at Leytonstone Library. Newham takes notices by appointment at East Ham Town Hall. In Hackney, the registration service at the Hackney Service Centre, 1 Hillman Street, books registrars for ceremonies at the borough's approved venues.

Ask your own register office how far ahead to give notice and book the registrars, because each borough sets its own appointments. Once the ceremony time is fixed, send it to us with the venue address. Kaushik builds the photography plan outwards from that time: preparations before it, family groups straight after, then the couple portraits and the reception.

Venues and settings

Galleries, art deco halls and rooms beside the water

The licensed lists in these boroughs go well beyond hotels. They include galleries and museum rooms, Victorian vestry halls and art deco buildings, a converted church, rooms beside the reservoirs and docks, and large banqueting suites. Each type brings different photographs: panelled rooms for formal groups, glass and water for wide views, and big ballrooms for the energy of a full dance floor.

Older halls bring high ceilings, panelling and staircases, which suit formal group photographs and a slow walk down for the couple. Waterside rooms bring wide views but bright, changeable light. Kaushik looks at where the windows face and when the sun drops, and plans the portraits for the kindest part of the afternoon.

If your reception venue is not licensed for ceremonies, the legal part can happen at the town hall first, with the celebration elsewhere afterwards. A two-site day works well when the boroughs sit side by side, as Hackney and Waltham Forest or Newham and Redbridge do; just leave time for weekend traffic between them.

Portraits

Parks for wedding portraits between Hackney and Ilford

Parks are rarely far away in these boroughs. Victoria Park, opened in 1845 as 'The People's Park', covers 86 hectares on the Hackney and Tower Hamlets border. Lloyd Park in Walthamstow has original terraced gardens and a moat with an island. West Ham Park, on Forest Gate's southern side, has Ornamental Gardens and a bandstand, but no car park, so plan a drop-off point for the couple.

Further east, Valentines Park in Ilford holds a Green Flag Award for 2026 and surrounds the historic gardens of a Grade II* listed mansion. Clissold Park in Stoke Newington has a small herd of fallow deer, and Springfield Park looks across Walthamstow Marshes. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park adds the London Blossom Garden, 33 blossom trees with one for each London borough.

One rule matters here. The City of London Corporation requires a licence for any commercial filming or photography in Epping Forest, and that includes Wanstead Flats beside Forest Gate. If you would like portraits there, tell us early so the licence question is settled well before the day.

Distance and travel

Hackney at 16 miles, Ilford at 20: what the distance means

Every borough on this page is within about 20 miles of Northwood. Hackney is about 16 miles away, Walthamstow and Tower Hamlets about 17, Forest Gate about 19, and Newham and Redbridge close to 20. Travel from Northwood for your East London wedding is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, and it sits as a clear line in the quote.

Guests can rely on rail for most of the day. Stratford is served by the Underground, the Overground, the DLR, the Elizabeth line and National Rail, Forest Gate station has step-free access with lifts to every platform, and Walthamstow Central is the end of the Victoria line. Put the nearest station on your invitations, especially for town hall ceremonies.

For borough-level detail, read the town pages for Hackney, Walthamstow, Tower Hamlets, Forest Gate, Newham and Redbridge. The wedding photography page explains the packages, and the East London hub lists every other service.

Planning

Planning around East London

01

Count the photographer in

Hackney's Lanchester Suite and Redbridge's Elizabeth Suite each hold up to 30, and that figure includes the photographer. Keep a place for him when you plan the guest list.

02

Settle the Epping Forest licence

Portraits on Wanstead Flats fall under the City of London Corporation's licence rule for photography in Epping Forest. Raise it at the first meeting, not the week before.

03

Winter light by the water

Dockside and riverside rooms lose the light early between November and February. On a winter date, schedule couple portraits soon after the ceremony.

04

Put a station on the invitation

Stratford, Walthamstow Central and Shadwell put most East London ceremony rooms within reach by rail, which saves guests from hunting for parking.

05

Book the ceremony time first

Register office slots at East Ham, Fellowship Square and St George's Town Hall shape the whole day. Confirm yours, and the photography plan follows from it.

Good to know

Weddings in East London: questions answered

Wedding photography starts from £750. Packages are built around your day, so a short register office ceremony in Hackney and a full day from preparations to the reception are priced differently. Optional extras include a second photographer, a pre-wedding shoot and a hand-finished album. Travel from Northwood to your East London venues is set out in your written quote.

Yes. The room is green-walled and wood-panelled and holds up to 30 people, including the two witnesses, children and the photographer. Kaushik works from the side so the registrar and guests keep clear sight lines, and the group photographs follow outside the Grade II listed Art Deco town hall on Mare Street.

Fellowship Square offers the Strawberry Suite with William Morris interiors for up to 12, the Lodberry Suite for up to 60 and the Fellowship Civic Chamber for up to 145. Confirm the room with the council, then tell us, so Kaushik can plan where to stand and where the family groups will go.

Waltham Forest takes notices at Walthamstow Central Library, High Street, E17 7JN, or at its second office in Leytonstone Library. In Newham, notices are taken by appointment at East Ham Town Hall, 324 Barking Road. Ask the office how far ahead you need to book.

Check first. Wanstead Flats is the southernmost part of Epping Forest, and the City of London Corporation requires a licence for commercial photography there. West Ham Park, on Forest Gate's southern side, is another nearby option with its Ornamental Gardens and bandstand; ask the City of London about its rules as well.

Yes. Tower Hamlets has the Tower of London, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and riverside parks such as Island Gardens, which looks across the Thames to Greenwich. The register office is at St George's Town Hall on Cable Street, and the day can move to the riverside afterwards for portraits.

No. Hackney is about 16 miles from Northwood and Redbridge about 20, which is well within reach for a wedding day. Travel to East London is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, so you know the full cost before you commit.
