…Kaushik's work is fantastic and he took so much stress out of our special day. He and his team are highly professional, fun and friendly and work with you to capture the shots that you want. He captured some amazing moments of both us and our guests, some natural, some posed but all truly wonderful. We were blown away by our albums and videos and have no hesitation in recommending him to our family and friends.

Reesha G., Google review, 2015

I hired Kaushik for our wedding and I’m extremely glad I did!! Kaushik took amazing pictures and the quality of the pictures were amazing. Kaushik was very patient and was very helpful since the start. My family including our guest were constantly asking me who the photographer was as he gave the best service.

The shape of the conurbation

A city ringed by mill towns: how Greater Manchester fits together

Greater Manchester is less a county than a ring of boroughs around one city. Manchester sits at the centre, with Stockport about 6 miles to the south-east, Oldham 7 miles north-east and Rochdale about 10 miles out in the valley of the River Roch. Bury, Bolton and Wigan run round the northern and western edge, each with its own town hall, register office and market history.

For wedding planning, that means two quite different kinds of day. A city wedding uses Victorian civic buildings, converted warehouses and the canal basins of Castlefield. A borough wedding leans towards Pennine edges, town parks laid out in the cotton era and country house hotels on the fringe of the moors. Both are within reach in a single day, and the motorway ring of the M60 ties them together.

From Northwood, Stockport is the nearest at about 145 miles and Wigan the farthest at about 164. We say that plainly because it shapes the plan: for a morning start in the north-west, an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote.

Civil ceremonies

Register offices from Albert Square to Chadderton

Each borough runs its own registration service, and the rooms differ a great deal. Manchester Register Office is in Heron House on Lloyd Street, on the corner of Albert Square, and the city offers a standard ceremony or an enhanced one in the Pankhurst Suite, where you can add non-religious readings and music. In Stockport, the register office is the Henry Bell Room inside the Town Hall, where Tuesday morning ceremonies are for the couple and two witnesses, with larger rooms taking up to 12 or 55 guests.

Further out, Oldham Register Office is at Chadderton Town Hall on Middleton Road, Rochdale holds civil ceremonies in the Red Rose Suite of the council's Riverside building beside the River Roch, and Bolton uses the Queen Elizabeth II Room at its Town Hall for up to 48 guests on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Bury Register Office sits in Bury Town Hall on Knowsley Street, with Ramsbottom Civic Hall as another civic room.

Wigan offers some of the more photogenic civic options: the Atrium in Wigan Town Hall has ceremonial steps for group photographs, and The Lodge in Mesnes Park is licensed for ceremonies of up to 50 guests on every day except Tuesdays.

Venue types

Town halls, Tudor manors and Pennine inns

The venue mix across Greater Manchester is unusually civic. Several boroughs license their own Victorian and Edwardian town halls for weddings, with ballrooms, marble staircases and council chambers. In the south of the county there are Tudor and Elizabethan manor houses in council-owned parkland, along with hotels set beside large parks. Around Oldham and Saddleworth, licensed rooms range from green-oak inn function rooms in the hills to farm wedding barns in Delph.

In the city itself, couples weigh Grade II* listed buildings with Art Nouveau or Gothic interiors against large licensed halls behind stone façades that can host several hundred guests. Wigan adds a stadium with pitch-view lounges and hotels in their own grounds. Send us the name of your venue, and we will plan the day around its rooms and gardens.

Whatever you choose, ask the venue early about where photographs are allowed on the day, and whether a second room is free for portraits if the weather turns.

Where couples can step out for photographs

Greater Manchester has more public parkland than its reputation suggests. Heaton Park in Higher Blackley covers over 600 acres, the biggest park in the county, with a boating lake, ornamental gardens and the Grade I listed Heaton Hall. In Stockport, Vernon Park opened in 1858 as the town's oldest public park, and the 22 brick arches of Stockport Viaduct make a strong backdrop across the Mersey valley.

Closer to the moors, Daisy Nook Country Park on the Oldham and Tameside border has a lake, canal, viaduct and wildflower meadows, while Healey Dell, two miles from Rochdale towards Whitworth, has waterfalls on the River Spodden and a 100 ft viaduct. In Bury, Burrs Country Park sits on the River Irwell a mile from the town centre.

We pick a portrait stop that fits your timings rather than an ambitious detour. Twenty minutes in a nearby park often gives more than an hour lost to traffic on the M60.

Seasons and light

Planning for Pennine weather

The eastern boroughs climb into the South Pennines, and the weather there can change faster than in the city centre. Rochdale, Oldham and Saddleworth catch more wind and rain, so we always agree an indoor portrait plan alongside the outdoor one. Town hall staircases, panelled rooms and covered courtyards all work well when the sky closes in.

Summer evenings in the north-west run late, which gives a long window for portraits after the wedding breakfast. In winter, the light goes early, so ceremony times around midday leave room for photographs outside before dusk. Spring and autumn bring softer light and fewer clashes with other events on the big civic dates.

If your date is set and the forecast looks poor, tell us a week ahead. We will adjust the running order with you so the important portraits happen while the light is kindest.

Distance and logistics

Booking a London-based photographer for a northern wedding

We are honest that Greater Manchester is a long way from Northwood. Every booking here gets a written quote that sets out the travel and any overnight stay as separate lines, all in writing before you book. Multi-day weddings are planned day by day, with each event costed on its own.

Manchester Piccadilly is the city's largest terminus, and Stockport, Wigan North Western and Bolton all sit on main lines, which can make rail travel practical for some days. Where a wedding spreads across boroughs, we map the route between ceremony, portraits and reception at the planning stage.

Next, read the town guides for Manchester, Stockport, Oldham, Bolton, Bury and Wigan.

Planning

Planning around Greater Manchester

01

Check the Town Hall dates

Manchester Town Hall on Albert Square has been closed for refurbishment since 2018 and is due to reopen in spring 2027, so confirm which civic rooms are open for your date.

02

Agree a wet-weather plan

The Pennine boroughs around Rochdale and Oldham can turn wet quickly. Pick an indoor portrait spot at your venue before the day, not on it.

03

Ask about a hotel night

From Northwood to Wigan is about 164 miles. Before an early ceremony, an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote.

04

Map the M60 between rooms

A ceremony in one borough and a reception in another can cross the motorway ring. Give us both addresses and we will time the journey.
