For portraits we would suggest Mesnes Park on the edge of the town centre, with its formal gardens, bandstand, waterfall and lake, and we work there in short, considered bursts rather than shooting continuously. In Wigan that could mean the Atrium at Wigan Town Hall, which takes up to 60 guests and has ceremonial steps for group photographs, The Lodge in Mesnes Park for up to 50, or a larger day at Kilhey Court Hotel, and we would photograph the whole of it as it happens. At The Brick Community Stadium, where eight of the twelve lounges look over the pitch, a second photographer can stay with the guests while the first stays with you. Haigh Hall, a Grade II* listed former seat of the Earls of Balcarres, sits inside the 250 acres of Haigh Woodland Park, where the hall and woodland are being restored and the trails make a good setting for portraits. Kilhey Court Hotel, which caters for up to 300 guests, suits larger celebrations. Woodland means dappled light rather than open sun, so portraits are best positioned at the edge of the trees instead of under them. This Greater Manchester town carries a coal mining heritage and the historic Wigan Pier area, both giving harder industrial texture when a couple want something less traditional. Wigan North Western on the West Coast Main Line and Wigan Wallgate serve the town, with the M6 close and Hindley, Orrell and Pemberton nearby.
