Inside the darbar hall, heads covered and shoes off, the four laavan are sung by ragis while the sangat listens, and photography there stays discreet and never intrudes on the Guru Granth Sahib. Early on, a building we do not control decides the light along with the protocol, and we adapt. Later, elsewhere, at a hall or a resort, the lamps become ours to set and the decisions return to us. Coverage fails whenever those two get planned as one job, because the skills each one asks for barely overlap.

Congregational lighting serves the sangat, not a camera. It sits at one colour and one level, nothing about it is adjustable, and flash has no place in that room, so exposure is settled before we even step inside. Standing position and choice of lens are all that stay open, so the week beforehand is better spent asking the committee about movement than the ceremony is spent guessing.

Floor level seating governs everything: every frame worth keeping gets made from down there. Standing turns the lens onto a room of heads and shoulders, while dropping to the knees gives faces back. Footwear is left at the entrance, quieter but slower underfoot, which rules out the brisk repositioning a carpeted hotel corridor would allow. A couple of positions are agreed beforehand and we keep to those.

All four laavan close in the same manner, a circuit finished and the couple settled again, so difference must be built by us moving rather than by anything new occurring. A palla is short cloth, and a lens placed too far forward will show neither end of it. Milni happens outside, under whatever Greater Manchester has produced that morning. Langar runs low ceilinged and crowded. The doli, alone in the day, is what nobody restages, and somebody of ours waits outdoors ahead of it.

The photographer you met beforehand. Substitutions at short notice, handing your day to a stranger, are not how this works, and a second camera, where one is booked, gets named to you weeks ahead.
