Guru Granth Sahib governs how a camera behaves inside a darbar hall, and the institution governs everything else about it. One position and one lens serve for the whole ceremony, because movement is not available to us and neither is light. Reach is what we bring instead. From the back, a long lens finds the palla in hand and both faces through the laavan, and nobody turns round to see where a shutter went off. Nothing about the room needs to change for us.
Outside, the character of the day shifts twice. Milni has no fixed geometry and never will, so we work wide and let it be untidy. Langar deserves distance and quiet. By evening we are building a lit room from nothing, which is the only stretch we genuinely control, and then the doli asks for no help at all beyond whatever is already burning in the car park.
