During the most solemn passages we step back and lengthen the lens, so the granthi's words or the sacred fire are photographed from a respectful distance. At a Gujarati mandap we know the hastamelap and the four mangal pheras, and we photograph them in the order your priest keeps rather than a generic script.

A sangeet belongs to the family, all rehearsed dances and gentle teasing, and we keep pace with its energy late into the night. For Muslim families the walima is a generous celebration in its own right, and we cover it as fully as the nikah that precedes it. When the baraat sets off, the dhol drives the dancing and the groom moves slowly forward amid his family, and we are in the thick of every joyful step.
