Manchester is a great northern city with one of the UK's largest South Asian communities and the famous Curry Mile. Families throughout Rusholme, Cheetham Hill and Longsight bring us into their gurdwaras, mosques and banqueting halls, and we treat each setting with the respect it is due. At a Muslim nikah we photograph the vows, the mehr and the joyful moment the couple are declared married.

On the dance floor we shoot fast and close, catching the bhangra, the dhol and the uncles who never sit down, so the party reads as alive as it felt. For the jaimala and the joota chupai we stay close to the fun, because these lighter rituals carry as much of the family's character as the solemn ones. We make sure the families are in the story too, not just the couple.

From the Baraat to the Pheras and Beyond

For Tamil and South Indian families, the muhurtham reaches its heart as the thali is tied, and we are in position for that single, defining second. We work in the background of the priest, the granthi or the imam, reading their rhythm so the ceremony flows without a photographer in the way. We photograph the seven steps of the saptapadi and the couple's first steps as a married pair.

Each pre-wedding event carries its own mood, the intimacy of the mehndi, the play of the haldi, the exuberance of the sangeet, and we photograph all three in their own key. The reception is the joyful finale, with speeches, the first dance and the bhangra. For Muslim families the walima is a generous celebration in its own right, and we cover it as fully as the nikah that precedes it.
