Stillness is our default inside the darbar hall. We choose a position early, hold it through the kirtan, and let the sangat settle around us rather than working our way between them. Sound guides our timing, because the ragis signal the next laav before anybody rises, and hearing that change coming is how we are already framed for the walk. The karah prashad, the matha tek, the offerings at the palki, none of it is ever interrupted; we photograph the flow of worship from the edges of the hall.

Walking the laavan around the Guru Granth Sahib
Inside the darbar hall we work with our heads covered and our movements slow, positioned discreetly to one side so the ceremony before the Guru Granth Sahib is never disturbed. Wedding registers are sometimes signed at the gurdwara after the ceremony, and we cover that too, though we always let the sacred part of the morning finish completely first. Vows in a Sikh wedding are sung rather than spoken, and understanding that changes how the ceremony is covered, since the meaning lives in the ragis' verses and not in a moment of speech.
The baraat arrives behind the dhol players, and we are in the middle of it, photographing the drumming, the dancing and the groom being brought to the gurdwara in style. We photograph the sehra bandi as the last quiet chapter of the groom's morning, the turban finished, the sehra tied and the mother's blessing before the noise of the baraat begins. During the choora ceremony we photograph the red and ivory bangles being slipped on by your maternal uncle, the blessings of the family and the tears that usually arrive with them.

Mehndi from the night before is checked, admired and photographed properly in daylight, when the colour has darkened and the patterns finally look the way the artist intended them to. Grandmothers and aunts are at the centre of the maiyan, and we make sure their hands, their songs and their laughter are all remembered.
Golden hour rarely lines up with a Sikh wedding schedule, so we take the light when it comes, often grabbing ten minutes outside between the langar and the drive to the reception. Arrival at the reception is the second entrance of the day and deserves the same care as the first, so we are inside the room and framed before the doors open.
