During the dua that follows the acceptance, we lower the cameras almost to nothing, holding one or two respectful frames of the raised hands and bowed heads. Turkish and Arab ceremonies often run shorter and differently structured than a South Asian nikah, so we ask beforehand rather than arriving with assumptions about when the important seconds will fall.
Dhol players are photographed properly during the baraat, the sticks blurring, the effort and the joy of the men dancing the groom in. Mehndi is smeared playfully on the groom too in many families, and we photograph the teasing, the laughter and the colour that ends up on everyone. Where an event is for women only, we agree in advance what is and is not photographed, and we do not enter. Honest boundaries are worth more than a few extra frames.

Warm and unhurried, the family photographs at home before the ceremony are gathered gently while everyone is still fresh and together. Songs, drumming and dancing fill the mehndi night, and we work through the celebration so the energy of the evening carries into the album.
Equal care goes to the loud moments and the still ones, from the drums of the baraat to the silence of the dua after the contract. Between the nikah and the walima there is often a pause, and we use it for relaxed portraits while the light is still good.
