Fire is the fixed point of a Hindu ceremony, and photographically it behaves as a small warm lamp nobody is allowed to reposition. Everything else in the frame is cooler than it. A picture holding both the agni and the faces behind it is therefore doing two jobs, and we resolve that by exposing for the people and letting the flame stay as warm as it actually is. The mandap contributes geometry of its own, a canopy standing on legs, throwing a hard shadow across whoever kneels beneath it.
A sevenfold repetition around the same small square rewards a lazy camera and punishes a careful one, so ours keeps shifting: down at floor level for one pass, turned onto the parents for another, tight on joined hands and the knot for a third. Varmala is the reverse difficulty. It takes as long as lifting two pairs of arms, and nobody will repeat it for us.
