A Sikh morning in Stockport begins before most of the town is awake. Its opening hours sit inside a building a congregation owns, not one you have hired. Carpet, seating, ceiling height and which way each window faces were decided years ahead of your date. Nothing there is negotiable, nor should it be. Ardas puts the whole hall on its feet and hands you the one wide frame worth having, made from the back where nobody is looking anyway. Faces loosen once karah parshad goes round. Milni and jago happened on other days and belong to other plans entirely. The doli waits at the far end, with the daylight normally spent, and arguing about that costs more than photographing whatever the car park gives you.

Do you photograph the evening reception in Stockport as well as the ceremony?+
