Milni, choora, laavan and doli
Milni tends to be an outdoor affair, two families meeting in whatever the Pennine weather supplies, and it is the last stretch of morning with real space in it. Choora is close work, indoors, generally crowded, rewarding early arrival more than quick reflexes. Kirtan runs underneath much of the morning and gives the room its pace, which is worth listening to rather than watching. Jago the previous night runs on available light alone, and flash would only spoil it. Any baraat belongs with the outdoor material.
Indoors, the laavan run four circuits, which from a fixed seat look identical and are nothing of the kind. Differences worth chasing live in hands, in the palla, in who happens to be watching from a side wall. Karah parshad follows, then langar, and that sociable portion of the record largely takes care of itself. Doli ends the day outdoors, where we stand well back.
