The maiyan is warm and wonderfully messy, and we photograph the vatna being applied, the singing of the women and the laughter as the turmeric paste finds every relative in the room. Akhand path bhog is a calm, prayerful morning that sits beneath all the celebration, and we photograph it quietly and without flash, so the album carries the devotion as well as the dancing. Turmeric ends up on far more people than the bride, and we follow it around the room, because a maiyan is really a picture of a family enjoying itself rather than a ceremony.
