Relatives travelling in from elsewhere can use Preston station, a West Coast Main Line interchange roughly half-way between London Euston and Glasgow Central, so a morning start at the gurdwara is realistic for them. Engagement portraits before the wedding, a second photographer on the day and a fine art album afterwards round out the package, and we are glad to travel from London to Lancashire and beyond for it.

Plan them apart, then. Find out early who genuinely looks after the ceremony room, and take instructions from that person and not from a venue coordinator. After that, work backwards from the evening: what the move between the two costs you in daylight, when the change of clothes happens, and which relatives end up in which vehicle. Portraits vanish into that gap unless the gap has been given a shape beforehand.

Low, still and to one side in the darbar hall
Floor-level seating pulls the eye line down with it, and frames made from standing height in such a room read as wrong. So we keep low, work from a flank, and generally reach for length rather than width. We take the ambient the building hands us; nothing gets fired towards the platform. The laavan run as four circuits, the same faces crossing the same spot four separate times, and the only decent response is to alter our own behaviour rather than ask anybody to alter theirs.
Earlier, outdoors, the milni sets two families opposite one another in daylight and open air, which makes it the only span of morning where our feet are free. Langar afterwards sits low and horizontal and gets underrated constantly. The doli closes everything, unrehearsed and requested by every family afterwards, so we claim a vantage for it while the cars are still being loaded. There is no rerun of it.
