Treat it as two bookings, because it is two buildings doing two unrelated jobs. Within the darbar hall, whatever lighting the institution installed is the lighting you get, and our standing positions are whatever the granthi permits, so the contribution there is preparation and restraint. The evening inverts those constraints entirely. What arrives is an empty room we may shape, where every judgement about brightness and colour belongs to us and is therefore ours to get wrong.

Guest numbers, not taste, tend to decide which evening room you can use, and a big room absorbs light. Find out early what the ceiling is made from. A low pale one throws flash back generously; a high dark one returns nothing, and that answer changes what we carry rather than what we charge.

The palla, the laavan and the hymns that guide them

Guru Granth Sahib decides how every frame in that hall gets built. It is not a backdrop, not something to compose a portrait against, and never reduced to scenery. One position is agreed with whoever is looking after the hall, then held throughout on available light alone. Restraint is the entire technique here. That is not a compromise, since the room belongs to the sangat and our convenience carries no weight in it.

The laavan give four passes. Watch the palla instead of the faces and the rounds stay separable afterwards, so four pictures survive where otherwise there would be one. Everything with movement in it happens outside those constraints. Milni never assembles where anybody predicted, so we cover ground instead of guarding a doorway. Langar produces the frames nobody thinks to request. Doli cannot be re-run, so one of us waits by the car before the goodbyes begin.

All four, and framed so they are distinguishable rather than four versions of one picture. Height and side change between rounds while we stay inside the agreed spot, and the palla tells us where in the sequence we currently are.

Are you able to work without flash near the Guru Granth Sahib?+

Flashless is the default here, not a concession granted on request. Fast glass and a sensor that copes when pushed make the hall's own light sufficient. Nothing gets triggered, nothing mounted, and nothing is left in anyone's eyeline.

Do you photograph the evening reception in Blackburn as well as the ceremony?+

Yes, planned as a second shoot carrying its own kit list. A banqueting hall goes dark long before the speeches start, so lighting goes up during the meal and comes back down once the floor fills with dancers.
