…Kaushik's work is fantastic and he took so much stress out of our special day. He and his team are highly professional, fun and friendly and work with you to capture the shots that you want. He captured some amazing moments of both us and our guests, some natural, some posed but all truly wonderful. We were blown away by our albums and videos and have no hesitation in recommending him to our family and friends.

Reesha G., Google review, 2015

West and east

Bury St Edmunds in the west, Ipswich in the east

Suffolk's two big wedding towns sit at opposite ends of the county. Bury St Edmunds, in the west, is run by West Suffolk Council and grew around the abbey shrine of Saint Edmund. Ipswich, in the east, is the county town and largest settlement in Suffolk, one of England's oldest towns, settled since early Anglo-Saxon times around its port on the River Orwell.

For us, the west is nearer. Bury St Edmunds is about 65 miles from Northwood; Ipswich is about 74. Neither is a quick hop, and for a wedding that starts with preparations at 9am in Ipswich, an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote. We will look at your timings and say honestly what we suggest.

Whatever is needed goes on paper first. Your written quote lists travel from Northwood and any overnight stay as separate lines, set out before you book. If the ceremony is in Bury St Edmunds and the reception near Ipswich, give us both addresses, because the drive across the county between them needs its own slot in the timings.

Register offices

The Abbeygate Room, Endeavour House and the Pickwick Room

In Bury St Edmunds, the register office ceremony room is the Abbeygate Room in the town centre. It holds up to 56 guests plus the couple, and the register office is clear that photographers and children count towards that number. If your guest list is close to the limit, remember to leave a place for the photographer when you plan who comes.

In Ipswich, Suffolk County Council's register office is at Endeavour House, 8 Russell Road. Ceremonies are also held in the Pickwick Room at Ipswich Town Hall, for up to 36 guests plus the couple. The room has a sweeping staircase that suits a first photograph as a married couple, and it can be hired separately for a reception, which keeps a small wedding in one building.

Suffolk's approved venue list runs from very small to large. The capacities on the county's list range from rooms for a few dozen guests to halls and hotels that take well over 200.

Venue types

Country hotels, Georgian rooms and outdoor ceremonies

Around Bury St Edmunds, the approved list takes in Georgian assembly rooms in the town centre, country house hotels with their own grounds, and larger hotels that offer outdoor ceremonies. Some town-centre hotels are a short walk from the register office, which is handy for guests who want to stay over after a small civil ceremony.

Around Ipswich, the list includes country house hotels with gardens and parkland, and halls and manors on the edge of town towards Kesgrave and Woodbridge. These are country settings, so the portrait time often depends on how far the gardens are from the reception room.

Suffolk County Council's approved venue list shows each venue's licence and capacity, so use it to shortlist before you visit. Tell us your venue when you enquire, along with where the drinks reception and the dinner will be, and we will work out the portrait time from there.

Abbey ruins, rose gardens and the Orwell waterfront

Bury St Edmunds packs a lot of history into a walkable town centre. The Abbey Gardens on Mustow Street hold the ruins of an 11th-century Benedictine monastery, the Appleby Rose Garden with over 400 roses, and the River Lark along the east side. Entry is free. It is where, in 1214, England's barons are believed to have sworn to force King John to accept the Charter of Liberties, which led to Magna Carta.

Nearby, St Edmundsbury Cathedral's 150-foot Millennium Tower was finished in 2005, and the Grade I listed Theatre Royal on Westgate Street, opened in 1819, is the only working theatre run by the National Trust. On the edge of town, Nowton Park has almost 200 acres of landscaped countryside, arboretums, a hornbeam maze and a lime avenue planted around 1880 that fills with over 100,000 daffodils in spring.

In Ipswich, Christchurch Park covers 33 hectares in the heart of the town and was its first public park when it opened in 1895. The Waterfront, on a meander of the River Orwell, has a marina with yachts, restaurants and cafés, for a more modern backdrop.

Season and travel

When to marry in Suffolk, and how guests get there

Spring is a particular draw in west Suffolk, when Nowton Park's lime avenue is full of daffodils. Summer suits country house gardens and riverside portraits, and the Appleby Rose Garden is at its fullest. In winter the focus moves inside, to panelled rooms, vaulted cellars and grand staircases.

For guests from London, Ipswich station is on the Great Eastern Main Line about 69 miles from Liverpool Street. Bury St Edmunds station, a Grade II listed building of 1847, is on the Ipswich to Ely line with trains to Ipswich, Cambridge and Peterborough. Allow time in the plan for guests who change trains.
