Thank you for capturing our special day so well and creating beautiful photos that we will treasure forever. We love our stunning wedding album! You took the time to get to know us from the pre-shoot right up until the wedding day and made us feel comfortable and relaxed, and we had a lot of fun along the way especially with your silly little jokes to get us to laugh!

Kalpa S., Google review, 2018

I needed some photos in a rush and Kaushik was very accommodating and helpful. He has a nice studio too. Happy to recommend!

Himansu U., Google review, 2022

Would 100% recommend Kaushik Bathia Photography! Kaushik and his team photographed all my wedding functions and I couldn't be happier with the results. He listened to us, got to know our family and close one's and captured all the special moments. We had a great mixture of romantic portraits and natural candid photos of the ceremony. Thank you so much for the most beautiful, treasured wedding photos!

Register offices

Nine council ceremony buildings from Twickenham to Woolwich

In the south-west, Richmond's ceremonies take place at York House on Richmond Road, Twickenham, in either the Salon or the glass-domed Winter Garden overlooking the gardens, each for up to 40 guests. Kingston Register Office is in The Old Court House on the ground floor of the Guildhall, where the wood-panelled Oak Room seats 70, the Grove Room 40 and the Acorn Room 8. The Coronation Stone, linked to the crowning of Saxon kings, is displayed in the Guildhall grounds.

In the middle band, Wandsworth Town Hall on Wandsworth High Street is a Grade II listed art deco building opened by Queen Mary in 1937, with five ceremony rooms. Its Grand Chamber holds up to 100 people, a count that includes the couple, the guests and the photographer. Lambeth's Assembly Hall, at the Town Hall on Brixton Hill, seats up to 300 behind a marble-lined foyer, and couples book the registrar separately.

Further out, Southwark's register office is Camberwell House at 34 Peckham Road, a Grade II listed building of 1846 with a Garden Room. Merton's is Morden Park House, a Georgian manor of 1770 with a courtyard. Sutton holds ceremonies in the Oaks Room at the Civic Offices for up to 50 guests. Greenwich uses Woolwich Town Hall, and Lewisham's register office sits on Lewisham High Street next to University Hospital Lewisham.

Venue types

Riverside houses, galleries and Georgian rooms: the South London venue mix

Approved venues here lean towards the river and towards history. Richmond's list runs from a gallery and riverside hotels to Kew Gardens and Hampton Court Palace, each with its own guide here: read Kew Gardens weddings, Hampton Court Palace weddings and York House, Twickenham. Southwark Council's ceremony service lists more than 25 licensed venues in that borough alone.

Lambeth and Lewisham add galleries, museums and a theatre to the mix, while Kingston and Merton have Victorian and Georgian houses in landscaped grounds and pubs with their own licences. Greenwich has a cluster of historic buildings inside the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site that UNESCO inscribed in 1997. For larger receptions, Tooting and Mitcham both have banqueting suites, and Wandsworth has dry-hire civic halls.

Whatever the venue, ask early about photography rules. Some historic houses and museums limit where a camera can go, and the Royal Parks need a separate permit for wedding photography on their land, issued for up to ten people for one hour. Tell Kaushik the venue when you enquire, and the plan for the day is built around its rules.

Light and season

Planning around the river, the parks and the London skyline

Several of the widest views in this area look north or east over the city. King Henry's Mound in Richmond Park looks to St Paul's Cathedral, Greenwich Park's highest hill and One Tree Hill face the skyline, and Hilly Fields near Ladywell rises to 175 feet with views over Lewisham and the City of London. These suit a portrait slot late in the afternoon, with the low sun behind the camera.

Spring and early summer bring the gardens: the rhododendron, azalea and camellia plantings of Cannizaro Park beside Wimbledon Common, the rose garden in Terrace Gardens on Richmond Hill, and the Edwardian Flower Garden in Greenwich Park. In autumn and winter the commons and the riverside carry the pictures, and an indoor plan, such as the marbled hall and sweeping stairway at Wandsworth Town Hall, is worth having for rain.

Keep the portrait session between ceremony and reception close to one of the two. If you marry at Kingston's Old Court House, Canbury Gardens, a Green Flag park with a bandstand on Lower Ham Road, sits by the river in the same town. After a Sutton ceremony, the council itself points couples to Manor Park nearby, where biodegradable confetti is allowed.

Moving between boroughs

A wedding day that crosses South London

A South London wedding can easily involve more than one borough: a register office in Lewisham and a reception in Greenwich, or a ceremony at Morden Park House and a meal in Wimbledon. Kaushik plans the timings with you so that the portraits and the group photographs fall where the travel between venues allows.

Rail links help guests more than they help a photographer carrying equipment. Clapham Junction joins the Victoria and Waterloo routes, Wimbledon links the District line, Thameslink and Tramlink, and Lewisham has DLR trains from Bank and Stratford. Kaushik travels out from Northwood, and that journey is set out in the written quote along with any travel between your venues.

The nearest parts, around Richmond and Kingston, are about 12 to 14 miles from the studio; Greenwich and Lewisham, at about 19.4 and 19.8 miles, are the farthest. Neither end changes what is covered, but an early start in the south-east is worth planning together, especially for a morning ceremony.

Planning

Planning around South London

01

Count the photographer in

Wandsworth's Grand Chamber holds up to 100 including the photographer, so count Kaushik in when you finalise the guest list for that room.

02

Lambeth's separate registrar

Lambeth's Assembly Hall seats up to 300, but the registrar is booked as a separate step, so confirm both before fixing the date.

03

Royal Parks permit

Wedding portraits in Richmond, Bushy or Greenwich Park need a permit for up to ten people for one hour; apply through the park office.

04

Sutton confetti

Sutton's register office suggests Manor Park in the town centre for photographs, and biodegradable confetti is allowed there.

05

Kingston's three rooms

The Acorn Room at Kingston's Old Court House takes 8 guests, the Grove Room 40 and the Oak Room 70, so a small wedding can choose a room that fits.

Weddings in South London: questions answered

For a South London wedding, Kaushik Bathia's photography is from £750. Packages are built around your day, so the final figure depends on the hours, the number of events and any extras such as a second photographer, a pre-wedding shoot or a hand-finished album. For a South London wedding, the travel from Northwood appears in your written quote before you book.

Yes. After a Town Hall ceremony, couples may take photographs in the art deco marbled hall with its sweeping stairway, in the garden, and in the courtyard with its fountain and stepped main entrance. That gives a full set of pictures without leaving the building, which helps if the weather turns or the reception is some way off.

Kingston's Acorn Room at The Old Court House takes up to 8 guests, and York House in Twickenham offers the Salon or the Winter Garden for up to 40. Lewisham's Evelyn Suite holds up to 40 people in total, counting the couple and two witnesses, with an accessible patio garden outside for photographs.

Lambeth's Assembly Hall at the Town Hall on Brixton Hill seats up to 300, the largest of the council rooms in this area. Greenwich's Victoria Hall at Woolwich Town Hall takes up to 130, and Wandsworth's Grand Chamber up to 100. Remember that in Lambeth the registrar is booked separately from the room.

Yes. Wedding, civil partnership and lifestyle photography in the Royal Parks, Greenwich Park included, needs a wedding and lifestyle photography permit, each issued for up to ten people for one hour. Richmond Park and Bushy Park work the same way. Apply through the park office and share the time slot so the day can be built around it.

Yes. Sutton is about 19.1 miles from the Northwood studio, at the southern edge of this area. Its register office is the Oaks Room at the Civic Offices, and in Carshalton, Grove Park wraps around the north and east sides of the village's Lower Pond within the conservation area. Travel from Northwood to Sutton is shown in the written quote.

Yes. Christian, civil and register office weddings are all covered, as are Hindu, Sikh and Muslim weddings. If your church is in South London, ask the vicar or priest about any photography guidance during the service, and Kaushik plans his positions around it.
