Civil ceremonies at York House: rooms, notice and what you may include
Which rooms. The council lists the Loggia Room, the Salon, the Terrace Room and the Winter Garden as approved ceremony rooms. The Loggia Room is the Register Office's own room, overlooking a secluded garden at the rear, licensed for 75 guests excluding the couple and those working; ceremonies start on the hour with a one-hour appointment, and live streaming and a music system are available. The other three are available on Friday afternoons, Saturdays and Sundays, and the registrar is booked separately. Clarendon Hall and the Hyde Room appear on the 2026 ceremony charges sheet but are not named as approved rooms, so ask before planning a ceremony there.
Notice. Richmond requires at least 29 full days' notice, extended to 71 days where a partner is not a British or Irish national and does not hold Indefinite Leave to Remain or relevant status. Notice can be given up to a year ahead and is tied to the venue you declare. It costs £42 per person for UK and Irish nationals and £57 for foreign nationals.
Content. Civil ceremonies cannot include religious content; non-religious music, readings and personal vows are welcome, and changes must be notified at least 4 weeks ahead.
Ask the council in writing: is there any rule on photography, flash or video during the ceremony, and on drones in the gardens? None is published.
Confetti, candles and photography at York House
| Photography | No published restriction; the council calls the Thames-side gardens a perfect setting for photographs |
|---|---|
| Flash and drones | Not published |
| Confetti | Biodegradable only, thrown on the paved area immediately outside the ceremony room, not in the room or the public gardens (Loggia Room terms) |
| Candles and open flame | No flammable liquids, gels, gases or candles on site (catering waiver) |
| Alcohol | Not in the Loggia Room or in the gardens; hirers may serve their own alcohol free of charge in function rooms |
| Decorations | Nothing pinned, stuck or attached to walls; free-standing decorations only |
Where a rule is shown as not published, ask the venue in writing before the day.
Getting ready at York House
The council does not publish a getting-ready room for weddings. Clarendon Hall has a stage and dressing rooms, but they are not described for wedding preparation, so ask if you want to use them. All set-up time must sit inside your booked hours.

| Finish | Depends on the room: the charges sheet and the room pages give different end times |
An outline for planning, not a schedule. Times are shown only where the venue publishes them; everything else is a stage to time with you and confirm with the venue.

Riverside gardens and Georgian rooms: photo planning notes
- The gardens running down to the Thames are the obvious portrait setting, and the council names them for photographs.
- Confetti is only allowed on the paved area just outside the ceremony room, so we set up there before guests come out.
- No candles are allowed anywhere on site, so evening atmosphere comes from the rooms' own lighting rather than candlelit tables.
- Ceremony room hire is one hour including set-up, so arrivals and the first photographs need a tight plan.
- All rooms are on the ground floor, which keeps family groups with older relatives simple.
Twickenham, Richmond and the buses to Richmond Road
York House is on Richmond Road, Twickenham TW1 3AA. The council's travel sheet gives South Western trains from London Waterloo or Clapham Junction to Richmond and Twickenham, the District line to Richmond, and buses H22, R68, R70, 490 and 33 from Richmond to stops on Richmond Road near the house. We travel from our Northwood studio.
Parking at York House is limited
The council describes parking as very limited: a number of spaces are reserved outside the halls for your event, there is a public car park at the venue with a two-hour maximum stay between 9am and 5pm, and a multi-storey car park on nearby Arragon Road. Guests coming for a long reception should plan on the multi-storey or public transport.
When a York House day has to finish
The two official sources differ. The 2026 ceremony charges sheet gives Monday to Thursday 9am to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 10am to midnight, and Sunday 10am to 11pm. The room pages give the Terrace Room Friday 2pm to 1am, Saturday 9am to 1am and Sunday 10am to midnight, and Clarendon Hall Monday to Thursday 9am to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 9am to 1am and Sunday 10am to midnight. Ask the lettings team which applies to your booking. Amplified music in the Terrace Room needs prior permission.
