Shorter from the south-west
Richmond is about 12 miles from the studio and Kingston 14, against 19.4 from Greenwich and 19.8 from Lewisham. Plan the slot around that difference.

A first birthday cake smash at the Northwood studio, with the backdrop and splash set ready, for one-year-olds from Richmond, Wimbledon, Brixton, Greenwich and the rest of South London.
The short answer
At the Northwood studio, 21 Joel Street, HA6 1NU, where the backdrop and props are ready for you. That is about 12 miles from Richmond upon Thames, 14.7 from Lambeth and 19.8 from Lewisham, so the drive north is part of the plan. Aim for a date when your baby is somewhere between 11 and 13 months and sitting steadily on their own. Allow one to two hours at the studio, and ask for prices by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383.
Me and my heavily pregnant Fiancee visited here as a birthday gift from a friend of hers and had a LOVELY experience, Kaushik made us feel VERY welcomed and comfortable and we also had a good laugh. He was also very clear and precise with his instruction with regards to posing so we could get the best picture. Overall a very nice experience and would recommend.
I was nervous about my newborn’s photoshoot but Kaushik made the experience very unforgettable. He knew how to handle my two week old baby with care. The pictures came out very beautiful and were forever grateful. He’s honestly the best. Very experienced, patient and professional. I’ll definitely use him again.
Amazing experience with Kaushik photography. Pictures came out very high quality. The studio is also very nice and family friendly. The photographer there took his time to capture very memorable detail and that meant a lot to my family and I. I’ll definitely recommend Kaushik Bathia
Your side of the river
A cake smash runs at the Northwood studio and nowhere else, so for a South London family the first thing to plan is the trip north. From the south-west it is shorter: Richmond is about 12 miles from the studio, Wandsworth 13.7 and Kingston 14. Lambeth is about 14.7 and Southwark 14.9, Merton 16.1, and the far south and east are the longest runs, with Sutton at 19.1, Greenwich at 19.4 and Lewisham at 19.8.
The studio sits on the Joel Street parade in Northwood Hills, two minutes' walk from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line, with parking close by. With a buggy, a boxed cake and a change bag, choose whichever of the car or the train is less effort for your family, and leave enough margin that nobody arrives flustered. A spare outfit for the journey home is worth packing whichever way you come.

Nap timing
The single biggest thing you can control is whether your baby arrives rested. Try to book a slot that lets the nap happen in the car seat on the way, rather than in the studio. From Greenwich or Lewisham, close to 20 miles out, the longer run can take in a full nap; from Richmond or Wandsworth the drive is shorter, so a slot that begins once the nap is over may suit better.
Tell us your baby's usual nap pattern when you enquire, and a time is suggested to fit it. The studio is open Monday to Saturday 10:30 to 18:00 and Sunday 13:00 to 18:00, so a Saturday or Sunday booking works if an older brother or sister is at school in Tooting or Sutton during the week. Bring a snack and a drink for the car, so the first minutes in the studio are play rather than hunger.
At the studio
Your baby starts in a clean outfit for a few tidy birthday portraits, and parents and older siblings can join those before anything gets messy. Then the cake you have brought goes down. A soft sponge is easiest for small hands to break into, in one or two colours that sit with the outfit, and if it comes from a bakery near home in Wimbledon or Herne Hill, collecting it the day before keeps the morning simple.
After that the pictures follow your baby: a long stare at the sponge is as good a frame as two fists in the icing. A splash finishes the session, and nothing is forced at any point. At Joel Street the backdrop and props are ready and waiting, so you bring only the cake, the clothes and the baby. Allow one to two hours there in total, which leaves room for a feed, a nappy change and a wobble or two.

Back home
The cake stays at the studio, but a first birthday is a good moment for a wider family session nearer home, and that one comes to you. On the south-west side, Canbury Gardens on Lower Ham Road in Kingston is a Green Flag park beside the Thames with a bandstand and a pavilion café. In Lee, Manor House Gardens has a lake, a fountain, a walled flower garden and a historic ice house, with short paths for a toddler on new legs.
Further south, Beddington Park in Wallington covers 58 hectares of woodland walks and formal gardens, with the River Wandle ending in a lake in the Grange Garden. An hour at home with the grandparents works just as well. Travel from Northwood for that session is set out in your written quote before you book; see family photography in South London and the South London hub.
No cake
If cake everywhere does not appeal, a first birthday portrait sitting can leave the smash out altogether. It can happen at the studio, with the same backdrop and the outfit you choose, or outdoors as part of a family session in a South London park, where your baby is photographed on a picnic blanket or taking those first steps on the grass.
Either way, tell us the birthday and the borough you are coming from, and a date is suggested to suit. A newborn session in South London covers the very start of the year, if you would like the two to bookend each other.

Planning
Richmond is about 12 miles from the studio and Kingston 14, against 19.4 from Greenwich and 19.8 from Lewisham. Plan the slot around that difference.
Book a time that lets your baby sleep on the drive north and wake shortly before arriving, ready for the cake rather than for a feed.
Picking up the sponge from a bakery near home the day before means the morning is only the drive and the outfits.
The studio opens on Saturdays and Sunday afternoons, which helps when an older child is at school in South London during the week.

Good to know
No. Cake smash sessions run at the Northwood studio only, where the backdrop and splash set are ready. A family session at home or in a park near you can be booked separately, and Kaushik comes to you for that.

Either works. The studio is two minutes' walk from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line, and there is parking close by. With a buggy, a boxed cake and a change bag, pick whichever is less effort for your family and leave a margin so the start is calm.
From close to 20 miles out, a slot that lets your baby nap on the longer drive and wake just before arriving tends to work. Tell us the usual nap pattern and a time is suggested around it, within the studio's opening hours.
Allow one to two hours at the studio for the tidy portraits, the cake and the splash at the end, plus the drive each way from South London. Keep the rest of the day light, as one-year-olds tend to sleep well afterwards.
