Three corners south of the river

South London from Twickenham to Blackheath, measured from Northwood

The south-west corner is the nearest. Richmond upon Thames is about 12 miles from the studio, and it is the only London borough on both sides of the Thames: Richmond and Barnes to the south, Twickenham to the north, with the council based at York House. Kingston upon Thames follows at about 14 miles and New Malden at 15. About half of Richmond's borough is parkland, taking in Richmond Park, Bushy Park and Kew Gardens.

The inner band runs along and just below the river. Wandsworth is about 13.7 miles out, Lambeth 14.7 and Southwark 14.9, with Tooting at 16 and Merton at 16.1. Southwark is the oldest part of South London, having grown up at the southern end of London Bridge, where Roman engineers built the first crossing around 43 AD. Clapham Junction, where the routes from Victoria and Waterloo converge, sits in the middle of this band.

The farthest points lie to the south and south-east. Sutton is about 19.1 miles from Northwood, Greenwich 19.4 and Lewisham 19.8, so the whole area falls inside a 20-mile reach of the studio. Greenwich became a Royal Borough on 3 February 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee, and Lewisham was London Borough of Culture in 2022, when its We Are Lewisham programme ran 696 events.

How it works here

Weddings at any South London venue, sessions at your door

Weddings have no distance limit, so a South London wedding is planned like any other: by its events, its guest numbers and the venues you have chosen. Wedding photography is from £750. Packages are built around your day, and a second photographer, an engagement shoot or a hand-finished album can be added. Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Christian, civil and register office weddings are all covered.

For sessions south of the river, Kaushik comes to you. That might be a family shoot on Wandsworth Common, newborn photographs in your living room in Kingston, a headshot morning in a Richmond office or a christening lunch in Lewisham. If you would rather travel yourselves, the studio is at 21 Joel Street, two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line. South London session prices are given on request: call or WhatsApp 07956 505383.

Every South London booking lists the travel from Northwood in the written quote, so the cost of the journey is in front of you before you commit. That holds whether the shoot is 12 miles away in Twickenham or nearly 20 miles away in Catford.

Backdrops and their rules

Royal Parks, commons and riverside gardens: what each one asks of you

Three Royal Parks fall in this area: Richmond Park, Bushy Park and Greenwich Park. Wedding, civil partnership and lifestyle photography such as family portraits in them needs a permit from the park office, and each permit covers up to ten people for one hour. Plan the group around that limit, or use the permit for the couple or the immediate family and photograph the wider group somewhere else.

Richmond Park covers more than 5,000 acres, is a National Nature Reserve with around 600 red and fallow deer, and has a view to St Paul's Cathedral from King Henry's Mound. The view from Richmond Hill is the only view in England protected by an Act of Parliament, and Turner and Reynolds both painted it. Greenwich Park, enclosed in 1433 and laid out to André Le Nôtre's plan in the 1660s, looks over the London skyline from its highest hill.

The commons are less formal. Wimbledon and Putney Commons cover 460 hectares protected by an 1871 Act, with Wimbledon Windmill near the centre. Tooting Common is noted for its large oaks and historic avenues, and Wandsworth Common is common land of medieval origin with woods, lakes and heath. Morden Hall Park, 125 acres of National Trust land on the River Wandle, has river channels crossed by footbridges and two snuff watermills.

Getting about

Stations and river crossings that shape a South London day

Rail links matter when guests or staff travel in. Clapham Junction is described as the busiest station in Europe by number of trains, with 100 to 180 an hour. Wimbledon is the only London station where the Underground meets Tramlink, and Morden is the most southerly station on the Underground. Lewisham is the terminus of DLR services from Bank and Stratford, and London Bridge, opened in 1836, is the oldest station in fare zone 1.

Crossings shape a day that moves between boroughs. Kingston Bridge, a five-arch Portland stone bridge opened in 1828, links Kingston with Hampton Wick and Bushy Park. In Greenwich the foot tunnel of 1902 runs 370 metres under the Thames to Island Gardens on the Isle of Dogs. Allow for these when a ceremony and a celebration sit on different sides of the river or at opposite ends of the area.
