Excellent photography services before and during our wedding. Really enjoyed him being our photographer and he did a great job with the pictures. Working with him on the albums post wedding has been fantastic, he takes time to understand our ideas and portrays them in his work. Brilliant personality and very professional.

Two cities side by side

Westminster and the Square Mile: how central London divides

Central London is really two places sharing a river bank. To the west is the City of Westminster, declared a city in 1540 and turned into a London borough in 1965 from the old metropolitan boroughs of Westminster, Paddington and St Marylebone. To the east is the City of London, the Square Mile, governed by the City of London Corporation under the Lord Mayor and split into 25 ancient wards, each with an alderman. Both count among Greater London's 33 local government districts, yet each sets its own rules for parks, gardens and ceremonies.

That split decides how a shoot is planned. Westminster brings the Royal Parks, Parliament Square, Trafalgar Square and the council's ceremony rooms on Marylebone Road and in Mayfair. The City brings St Paul's, Leadenhall Market, livery halls and small gardens set between office towers, with its gardens and churchyards looked after by the Corporation. Whose land you are standing on decides which permission you need, so that is the first thing to settle for any location you suggest.

The City is the UK's smallest city by area at 1.12 square miles. At the 2021 census it had 8,583 residents, while around 330,000 people work there each day. With so few homes and so many desks, the City pages on this site lean towards headshots, events and commercial work, while Westminster's parks and play areas in Maida Vale, St John's Wood and Pimlico suit family sessions.

Getting in

From Northwood Hills to Moorgate on the Metropolitan line

Our studio on the Joel Street parade is two minutes from Northwood Hills station, which is on the Metropolitan line. The Underground itself began in 1863 with the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground passenger railway, and the network Transport for London runs today has 11 lines and 272 stations. Moorgate and Liverpool Street are both served by the Metropolitan line, so the City end of central London sits on a direct line from our door.

Measured from the studio, the centre of London is about 13.8 miles away, Westminster 14.1 miles and the City 15 miles. For a wedding or a location session Kaushik brings the kit in himself, and travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote. Parking is the detail worth settling early: Hyde Park has two public car parks reached from West Carriage Drive, and for a City booking we talk through where a car can wait or whether the train makes more sense.

If you would rather come out to us, the studio handles headshots, portraits and family sittings without a permit, a booking slot or the weather to think about. For everything else in this guide, we come to you.

Permissions

Royal Parks permits and City garden licences, before the day

The Royal Parks treat a planned photoshoot differently from a visitor's snap. A wedding and lifestyle photography permit comes from the park office, and each one covers up to ten people for one hour. In Hyde Park, anything beyond purely personal photos on a phone or action camera needs a filming or photography permit. St James's Park, The Green Park and Hyde Park are all Royal Parks, so a portrait by the lake at St James's or along the Serpentine is planned around a permit slot.

The City of London Corporation asks for a licence or permit for organised photoshoots in its gardens and churchyards, and names engagement, wedding and portrait shoots in that rule. Visitors taking casual photos need no permission. That rule reaches places such as St Dunstan in the East, Postman's Park, Festival Gardens and Finsbury Circus Gardens.

None of this is hard, but it changes the plan. A ten-person, one-hour permit suits a couple and their closest family, not a full wedding party, so bigger groups are better photographed at the venue itself. Ask about permissions as soon as you have a date and a place in mind, and we will tell you which of your chosen spots need one.

Landmarks

From Parliament Square to St Paul's: settings with a story

The Palace of Westminster, rebuilt to Charles Barry's Gothic Revival design from 1840, has been Grade I listed since 1970 and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Its clock tower, finished in 1859 to a design by Pugin and Barry, became the Elizabeth Tower in 2012, and its Great Bell weighs 13.7 tonnes. Victoria Tower Gardens, between the Thames and the Houses of Parliament, holds Rodin's The Burghers of Calais and the Buxton Memorial to the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833.

Further east, St Paul's Cathedral was designed by Christopher Wren and built between 1675 and 1710. Leadenhall Market's wrought-iron and glass building, designed by Horace Jones in 1881 and owned by the Corporation, played the approach to the Leaky Cauldron in the first Harry Potter film. St Dunstan in the East is a garden planted inside the walls of a Wren church bombed in 1941, opened as a garden in 1970, with greenery hanging over Grade I listed stonework.

Each of these suits a different kind of picture. Parliament and the Abbey frame a formal portrait or a graduate in a gown; Leadenhall Market gives colour and cover on a wet day; St Dunstan gives soft, enclosed light for couples. Tell us the feel you want and we suggest the setting that fits it.

Dog portraits in St James's and Hyde Park

Dogs can usually be off the lead in St James's Park and Hyde Park if they are under control, with exceptions around the lake at St James's and the Rose Garden and Serpentine in Hyde Park. St Anne's Churchyard in Soho welcomes dogs, while some Westminster squares do not. Kaushik plans the walk around those rules. See pet photography and pet photographs in Westminster.

Planning

Planning around Central London

01

A direct line in

Moorgate and Liverpool Street are both on the Metropolitan line, which also stops two minutes from the studio, so the City end of central London is straightforward to reach.

02

Permit before place

Royal Parks permits cover up to ten people for one hour, and the Corporation licenses organised shoots in City gardens. Settle permission before you settle on a spot.

03

Confetti on the steps

Westminster allows confetti on the stone steps outside Mayfair Library and the Old Marylebone Town Hall, never inside, and asks for biodegradable confetti only.

04

Headshots where you work

Bank, Broadgate, Paternoster Square and Victoria all have offices close to stations, so a headshot day can run in your meeting room without anyone leaving the building.

05

Weekday markets as backdrops

Strutton Ground, Berwick Street and Tachbrook Street markets trade through the week and suit food, retail and branding shoots for the traders and businesses around them.

For a planned shoot, yes. The Royal Parks issue a wedding and lifestyle photography permit from the park office, covering up to ten people for one hour. Hyde Park needs a filming or photography permit for anything beyond personal photos on a phone or action camera. We help you choose the park and time, and you apply before the day.

Yes, with permission. The City of London Corporation requires a licence or permit for organised photoshoots in its gardens and churchyards, including engagement, wedding and portrait shoots. St Dunstan in the East is one of those gardens, set inside the ruined walls of a Wren church, so arrange the licence first and then book the date with us.

About 13.8 miles to the centre, 14.1 miles to Westminster and 15 miles to the City of London, measured from 21 Joel Street in Northwood Hills. Kaushik travels in for weddings and location sessions, and travel from Northwood is quoted in writing before you book.

A single sitting takes around 20 to 30 minutes, and prices are given on request by phone or WhatsApp.

It can be. The Sky Garden fills the top three floors of 20 Fenchurch Street and calls itself a free public viewing space, but access is restricted. Check its current rules for visitors and for any organised photography before planning a shoot there, and keep a ground-level City garden as your second choice.

Marriages and civil partnerships in the City are provided by the Islington Registrar, with ceremony rooms in the listed Islington Town Hall on Upper Street for 2 to 85 guests. The service, Say I Do Islington, lists over 40 licensed venues across Islington and the City, from ancient livery halls to modern restaurants.
