The short answer

Where can we do an engagement shoot in Central London?

Good choices in Central London include Leadenhall Market, St Dunstan in the East, the Barbican Estate and the Thames Path below St Paul's, as well as St James's Park and Hyde Park. The Royal Parks and the City of London Corporation both require a permit or licence for organised shoots, so the plan starts there. A session lasts one to two hours. Kaushik Bathia travels from Northwood, and travel is set out in writing before you book.

Permits

Royal Parks, City gardens and the rules behind a couples shoot

An engagement shoot counts as organised photography in both the Royal Parks and the City's gardens. The Royal Parks issue a wedding and lifestyle photography permit from the park office, covering up to ten people for one hour, and Hyde Park requires a permit for anything beyond personal phone or action-camera photos. The City of London Corporation needs a licence or permit for engagement, wedding and portrait shoots in its gardens and churchyards.

None of this is difficult, but it shapes the plan. One hour in a Royal Park suits a single outfit. A two-outfit shoot usually works better split between two places, for example a park in Westminster and a street location in the City, with the permit question checked for each one before the day.

The City

Wren ruins, a Victorian market and the Barbican lake

St Dunstan in the East is a public garden laid out in the ruins of a Wren church bombed in 1941, with a fountain and greenery draping the Grade I listed walls. It opened as a garden in 1970 and photographs as a mix of old stone and soft green. As a City garden, it falls under the Corporation's licence for organised shoots.

Leadenhall Market's wrought-iron and glass building, designed by Horace Jones in 1881 and owned by the City of London Corporation, gives colour and cover on a grey day. The Barbican Estate, built between 1965 and 1976 to designs by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, wraps terrace blocks around a lake with raised highwalks, giving clean concrete lines for couples who want something modern.

For a wider view, the Thames Path runs past the Millennium Bridge below St Paul's Cathedral, which Christopher Wren built between 1675 and 1710. The Sky Garden at the top of 20 Fenchurch Street is described as a free public viewing space, but access is restricted, so treat it as something to check rather than something to rely on. Westminster

From Trafalgar Square to the canal at Little Venice

Trafalgar Square opened in 1844, with the National Gallery and St Martin-in-the-Fields facing it and Nelson's Column at its centre; the fourth plinth has shown changing artworks since 1999. It is busy, so it suits an early start. A short walk south, Victoria Tower Gardens sits between the Thames and the Houses of Parliament, with Rodin's The Burghers of Calais, while Riverside Walk Garden at Millbank shows Henry Moore's bronze Locking Piece.

For something softer, St James's Park looks along The Mall to Buckingham Palace, with pelicans by its lake, and Rembrandt Gardens are sunken gardens beside the canal at Little Venice. Victoria Embankment Gardens adds formal flower displays and a summer bandstand. The Royal Parks permit applies in St James's Park; for the council gardens, check the position before the day.

Asian pre-wedding

Outfit changes and a bigger production in the city

For Asian weddings, a pre-wedding shoot can be a bigger production with several outfit changes, from traditional clothes to Western ones. In central London that means planning where to change: at home, or a room booked for the day, then out to one or two locations. Keep the permit hour in mind if a Royal Park is on the list, and put the most elaborate outfit where you have the most time.

A pre-wedding shoot can be added to your Asian wedding photography in Central London, and it doubles as a rehearsal: you get used to the camera and to Kaushik, which shows in the pictures on the day. Our guide to pre-wedding shoot locations in London has more ideas.

Timing and clothes

When to shoot before a London wedding, and what to wear

Book the engagement shoot a few months before the wedding, so the images are ready for save-the-dates, a wedding website or a large print for guests to sign at the reception. Golden hour gives the softest light outdoors, and early mornings in central London trade warm light for emptier streets. The Square Mile has around 330,000 people working there daily but only 8,583 residents, so a weekend morning there can be far calmer than a weekday.

Wear coordinated, comfortable outfits in muted, complementary tones without matching exactly, and skip big logos and busy patterns. Bring a dressier second look for variety. Travel from Northwood into central London, about 14 to 15 miles, is written into your quote before you book, and the session price is given on request. Our couples photoshoot page explains how a session runs, and the Central London wedding photography page covers the day itself.

Planning

Planning around Central London

01

Leadenhall Market

Horace Jones's 1881 iron and glass building keeps you dry and adds colour. It is owned by the City of London Corporation, so check its rules first.

02

St Dunstan in the East

A garden in the ruins of a Wren church bombed in 1941. Its Grade I walls and hanging greenery suit a softer engagement set.

03

One hour in a Royal Park

Each wedding and lifestyle permit covers up to ten people for one hour, so plan one outfit per park.

04

Christchurch Greyfriars

The rose garden is closed until spring 2027 for the creation of Greyfriars Square, so leave it off any plan before then.

Engagement and couples shoots in Central London: questions answered

Yes. The Royal Parks require a filming or photography permit for any photography in Hyde Park beyond personal use on a phone or action camera, and the wedding and lifestyle permit covers up to ten people for one hour. Hyde Park has two public car parks, reached from West Carriage Drive, if you are driving in with outfit changes.

Yes, with the City of London Corporation's licence or permit for organised photoshoots in its gardens and churchyards. Casual visitor photos need no permission, but an engagement shoot counts as organised. The ruined Wren walls and greenery make it a softer alternative to the big landmarks.

Its wrought-iron and glass building gives cover and warm colour when the weather turns. It is owned by the City of London Corporation, so check the rules for organised photography before the day. Pair it with The Monument, Robert Hooke's 61.6-metre column, or St Dunstan in the East for variety.

One to two hours, which leaves time to settle in, try a second outfit and capture a mix of posed and candid moments. In a Royal Park the permit covers one hour, so a longer session usually moves between two places, for example the Thames Path below St Paul's and a City garden.

Yes. Plan a base for changing, such as your home or a room booked for the day, and pick places that suit each outfit: Leadenhall Market for colour, the Barbican for clean lines, Victoria Embankment Gardens for flowers. A pre-wedding shoot can also be added to your wedding photography.

Phone or WhatsApp 07956 505383 and we will give you the session price. Travel from Northwood to central London is set out in your written quote, and any park or City garden permit needs to be in place before the day.

Yes. The same places work for an anniversary portrait or simply a picture of the two of you. Somewhere meaningful helps: the street near your first flat, the bridge where you met, or the Royal Exchange at Bank, opened by Elizabeth I in 1571, if the City is where your story started.
