The short answer

Where can we have an engagement shoot in North London?

North London has strong settings within about 10 to 15 miles of Northwood: Church Row and Parliament Hill in Hampstead, Central Square in Hampstead Garden Suburb, the Regent's Canal through Camden, Camden Passage in Islington and the lake at Grovelands Park in Southgate. A shoot usually takes one to two hours with one or two outfits. Some places need a permit, planned before the day, and travel is set out in your written quote.

An amazing experience from start to finish. The photographer was professional, friendly, and made us feel completely at ease. The photos perfectly captured genuine moments between us and turned out even better than we expected. Highly recommend for couples looking for high-quality photography.

Really pleased with my photos. Kaushik is very professional and took lots of picture for us to choose from. Our shoot was comfortable and not too long. I would highly recommend him.

Streets and squares

Georgian Hampstead, Lutyens squares and Islington lanes

Church Row runs from Frognal to Heath Street with St John-at-Hampstead at its west end: a tree-lined street of largely listed early 18th-century houses that the Pevsner guide called 'the best street in Hampstead'. It gives doorways, railings and long perspectives for a couple walking hand in hand. A few minutes away, Flask Walk runs east from Hampstead High Street, with a pedestrianised alley of shops at its western end near the tube station.

Hampstead Garden Suburb, by Temple Fortune, has more than 740 Grade II listed buildings, and its Central Square was laid out by Sir Edwin Lutyens with St Jude-on-the-Hill and the Free Church. The square is calm and symmetrical, which suits quieter, more formal portraits. It is a residential area, so the shoot stays small and considerate of the people who live there.

In Islington, Camden Passage is a pedestrian lane off Upper Street near Angel station, laid out in 1767 and known for its antique shops, markets and independent cafés. Further north, Gentleman's Row in Enfield is a street of 16th to 18th-century houses, and the Southgate Green conservation area keeps a group of Grade II listed Georgian buildings round the old village green.

Views and water

Primrose Hill, Parliament Hill and the Regent's Canal

Primrose Hill rises to almost 63 metres and has one of London's six protected viewpoints at its summit. It is a Royal Park, so lifestyle photography there needs a permit from the park office, each issued for up to ten people for one hour. Parliament Hill, in the south-east corner of Hampstead Heath, rises to 98 metres with its own view of the skyline, and the Heath needs City of London permission for professional photography.

The City of London's two-hour licence at the Hill Garden and Pergola names engagement shoots among the sessions it covers, for small groups with handheld equipment, Monday to Friday only and not on bank holidays. If that pergola is the picture you have in mind, plan a weekday and the licence well ahead.

The Regent's Canal runs from Paddington to Limehouse, passing through The Regent's Park beside London Zoo's aviary and then past the market stalls of Camden Town. In Islington it disappears into the 878-metre Islington Tunnel, which has no towpath, so walkers follow pavement waymarkers between the Muriel Street and Colebrooke Row portals. Choose one end of the tunnel for the waterside pictures rather than expecting a continuous walk.

Asian pre-wedding

Outfit changes and a bigger production for an Asian pre-wedding shoot

An Asian pre-wedding shoot can be a bigger production than a simple engagement walk, with two or three outfit changes, heavier jewellery and a wider mix of settings. It can be added to your Asian wedding photography as part of the package, so the same photographer sees you before the day and on it.

Plan the outfits around places that give room and somewhere to change. A practical pattern is to start at home in the first outfit, then drive to a park with free parking nearby, such as the council car parks by the Cockfosters Road entrance of Trent Country Park, where the lime avenue and lakes suit a lehenga or a long anarkali. Broomfield Park in Palmers Green, with its conservatory, bandstand and old oak trees, is another option on the eastern side.

Rich colours need a calm background. Pale stone at Hampstead Garden Suburb, the green of Highgate Wood or the water at Grovelands Park all let embroidered fabric stand out, where a busy street like Camden High Street can compete with it.

Timing

When to book: save-the-dates, the wedding website and the signing print

Engagement pictures are ready months ahead of the wedding for save-the-dates, a wedding website, announcing your news and a large print for guests to sign at the reception. Working back from those dates, a shoot several months before the wedding leaves time to print and post. It also gets you comfortable in front of the camera and builds a rapport with your photographer, which shows in more natural wedding pictures.

Golden hour, the last hour or so before sunset, gives the softest light on Parliament Hill and Primrose Hill, with the skyline behind you. In early summer, Queen Mary's Gardens in The Regent's Park hold about 8,000 roses, though photography beyond personal phone use there needs a permit from The Royal Parks.

Weekday dates open up the most options in North London, because the Heath licence runs Monday to Friday only. A weekend shoot works well in the Barnet and Enfield parks or on the Islington streets, where no Heath licence applies.

Getting there

Tube stops, car parks and the drive from Northwood

Most settings sit beside a station, which helps if you are arriving separately or changing outfits. Hampstead station is by Flask Walk, Angel is a short walk from Camden Passage, Cockfosters station is about ten minutes on foot from Trent Country Park, and East Finchley station is marked by Eric Aumonier's Art Deco archer of 1940, a fun detail for a city-style shoot. Totteridge & Whetstone station has a car park.

Kaushik comes to you from Northwood: Hampstead is about 10.5 miles away, Camden about 11.5, Islington about 14 and Southgate about 12. Travel from Northwood to the meeting point is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book. The Northwood studio is the alternative if you want clean, polished portraits in any weather.

Planning

Planning around North London

01

Hill Garden and Pergola licence

A two-hour weekday licence from the City of London covers small, handheld engagement shoots at the Hill Garden and Pergola. Weekends and bank holidays are excluded.

02

Primrose Hill permit

A Royal Parks permit covers up to ten people for one hour, which suits a couple and a photographer easily. Arrange it before fixing the date.

03

The Islington Tunnel has no towpath

The canal goes underground for 878 metres between Muriel Street and Colebrooke Row. Pick one portal for waterside pictures and walk the waymarked pavement between them.

04

Golden hour on Parliament Hill

The last hour before sunset lights the skyline from the side and keeps faces soft. Check the sunset time for your month and meet early.

05

Anniversary portraits

Not engaged? A couples shoot on Church Row or in Waterlow Park works just as well for an anniversary, a gift or a new picture for the wall.

Good to know

Engagement and couples shoots in North London: questions answered

Yes. Primrose Hill is a Royal Park, and wedding, civil partnership and lifestyle photography there needs a permit from the park office. Each permit covers up to ten people for one hour. The protected view from the summit makes it worth arranging, and we plan the permit with you before the date is fixed.

No. The City of London's two-hour licence for engagement, portrait and lifestyle shoots at the Hill Garden and Pergola runs Monday to Friday only, and not on bank holidays. For a Saturday, Church Row, Hampstead Garden Suburb or Grovelands Park in Southgate are good alternatives.

Partly. The canal passes under Islington through the 878-metre Islington Tunnel, which has no towpath, so walkers follow pavement waymarkers between the Muriel Street and Colebrooke Row portals. We plan the waterside pictures at one end and the street pictures between, or use the stretch past Camden Town's market stalls instead.

Allow one to two hours, with one or two outfits. That leaves time to settle in, walk between two nearby settings, such as Church Row and Flask Walk, and capture a mix of lightly guided poses and candid moments.

Coordinated, comfortable outfits in muted, complementary tones, without matching exactly, and no large logos or busy patterns. For the streets of Islington or Camden, a slightly dressier second look adds variety; for Highgate Wood or Trent Country Park, choose shoes you can walk in.

Yes. An engagement or pre-wedding shoot can be added to your wedding photography, and for Asian weddings it can be a larger shoot with outfit changes. Packages are built around your plans, so mention the pre-wedding shoot when you first enquire.
