Thank you for capturing our special day so well and creating beautiful photos that we will treasure forever. We love our stunning wedding album! You took the time to get to know us from the pre-shoot right up until the wedding day and made us feel comfortable and relaxed, and we had a lot of fun along the way especially with your silly little jokes to get us to laugh!

Kalpa S., Google review, 2018

Your gurdwara's guidance

Gurdwara rules first, then a morning that crosses boroughs

Each gurdwara sets its own photography rules, and Kaushik follows them from the places it allows, head covered. Tell us which gurdwara you have booked and any guidance it gives, and ask whether the laavan can be photographed from the sides or only from one fixed spot.

North London runs from Mill Hill on the Hertfordshire side to Edmonton on the Lea Valley side, and a Sikh wedding day can start in one borough and end in another. Tottenham in Haringey and Upper Edmonton in Enfield sit next to each other on the eastern edge, about 15 miles from Northwood, so a portrait stop at Bruce Castle Park or Pymmes Park fits between a gurdwara and a reception there. Send all the addresses with your enquiry and the timings are planned around the journeys.

The morning

Milni, ardas and the anand karaj in order

A Sikh wedding morning can start early. The milni, where the two families meet and the elders exchange garlands and embraces, happens outside or at the entrance, and it is one of the liveliest moments of the day. Tea and breakfast follow, and then the families move into the prayer hall for the anand karaj.

During the laavan the couple walks around the Guru Granth Sahib four times while the hymns are sung, with family helping at each round. Kaushik photographs the couple's faces, the hands guiding them and the sangat watching. Family groups are then taken outside or in a side room, depending on the gurdwara.

The doli, when the couple leaves the family home, comes later and can be the most emotional part of the day. If it happens at a house in Southgate or Enfield after a gurdwara in another borough, tell us both addresses so the journey between them is part of the plan.

Afternoon and evening

Receptions in Haringey and Enfield halls, with portraits on the way

After the gurdwara, the reception can be held in a banqueting hall. Haringey's approved venue list has large suites in Wood Green and near Bruce Grove in Tottenham, and Upper Edmonton has a ballroom venue for several hundred. The entrance, the bhangra, the speeches and the cake all happen in one evening, so the couple's portraits are best done before the doors open.

For a portrait stop between the gurdwara and the reception, Bruce Castle Park in Tottenham, the town's oldest public park, has a Grade I listed 16th-century house and an oak believed to be about 500 years old. Pymmes Park's Victorian walled garden in Upper Edmonton is another option, and Lordship Recreation Ground off Lordship Lane has a small lake and the Moselle Brook.

Civil marriage

The legal ceremony at George Meehan House, Hendon or Gentleman's Row

If the anand karaj is your religious ceremony, the legal registration can take place at a register office a few days before, or at a hall licensed for civil marriages on the day. Haringey's office at George Meehan House in Wood Green has the Woodside Room for 79 and a pergola garden licensed for 20 guests from May to September. Barnet's ceremonies are at Hendon Town Hall, and Enfield's at Gentleman's Row or the Civic Centre's Council Chamber.

A civil ceremony is also a chance for relaxed portraits in different outfits before the main wedding. Ask the borough about notice and booking, and add the ceremony to your package so it sits on the same quote as the gurdwara day and the reception.

Sikh weddings in North London: questions answered

Kaushik can photograph at any gurdwara whose guidance allows a photographer. Tell us the gurdwara you have booked and any rules it gives about cameras, head coverings or where to stand, and the coverage is planned around them. Travel from Northwood to the gurdwara is part of your written quote.

Where the gurdwara permits it, yes, from the positions it allows. If it prefers no photographs during part of the ceremony, that wish is respected, and the families' portraits are taken outside or in a side room afterwards.

Yes. The milni at the gurdwara entrance and the doli, which may leave from a family home, are both part of a full Sikh wedding day. Give us the times and addresses, for example a gurdwara in one borough and a home in Winchmore Hill, and the plan allows for the journey between them.

Haringey Register Office is at George Meehan House, 294 High Road, Wood Green, N22 8YX, with step-free access on the ground floor. Its rooms seat 79, 52 and 22 including the couple, and a garden with a pergola takes ceremonies of up to 20 guests between May and September. Wood Green station on the Piccadilly line serves the High Road.

Yes, with a permit. Alexandra Palace asks all photographers, amateur or professional, to hold a permit for Alexandra Park, which has a rose garden, a boating lake and views across the skyline. Arrange it well ahead. Alexandra Palace itself does not host weddings or receptions.

Coverage starts from £750. Each package is built around your day, from a gurdwara ceremony alone to a full day with milni, anand karaj, doli and reception, and extras such as a second photographer can be added. The travel from Northwood to the gurdwara and the hall is set out in writing before you book.
