Out with the baraat we walk backwards more than forwards, framing the groom through the dancing rather than over it, and we keep well clear of the drummers' arcs while doing it. As the ardas is said we lower our cameras and stand with the congregation, lifting them again for the hukamnama, so prayer is never treated as a photo call.

We follow each of the four laavan at walking pace, photographing the bride's brothers steadying her round the Guru Granth Sahib and the calm on both of your faces circuit by circuit. Waving the chaur sahib over the Guru Granth Sahib is a service performed throughout, and we photograph that quiet sewa too, because the darbar hall is never only about the couple. Rumalla covering the Guru Granth Sahib, the flowers around the palki sahib, the canopy overhead; these frames set the scene in an album and are taken before the hall fills.
The jago is unlike anything else, and we photograph the decorated pot carried on the head, the sticks banging on doors and the aunties dancing the night loud and late. Mehndi is applied to the groom's hand too, usually a small dot and a great deal of teasing, and we make sure that moment sits in the album next to the bride's full patterns. Bhangra takes over the reception floor, and we photograph the shoulders, the spins and the whole room moving together as the dhol and the DJ trade the night between them.

A jago night is one of our favourite things to cover, with the decorated pot carried on a head, the sticks banging on doors and the whole family singing. We often begin days before the Anand Karaj, with the maiyan at home, when the vatna is applied among laughter and the house is at its fullest.
A Sikh wedding day is long and layered, and we pace ourselves through it so the energy of the morning still shows by the evening. Because gurdwaras hold the Anand Karaj in the morning, we plan an early start so the getting-ready hours are never squeezed.
