Almost nothing about a nikah looks dramatic. A table, some paper, two witnesses, a short exchange, and it is finished. Anybody can photograph a document. The half second either side of qubool is the part worth having, when a mother's face changes and the room understands what has just happened, and catching it means being aimed at people rather than at paperwork when the moment lands. The mahr is the family's own, photographed as theirs and never as a prop.
Around that sit evenings of an entirely different temperature. The mehndi night, and mangni before it, run loose, crowded, badly lit and far more enjoyable to photograph than anything formal. A walima is closer to a production: a stage, a long queue of guests, and two people who must sit still for hours on end, so the plan there is about pacing, and about getting them down off the stage for a short while. Rukhsati we follow. Nobody should be arranging it.
