Hammersmith and Fulham is a riverside west London borough. We spend much of the year inside the mosques and banqueting venues of Greater London, so the sites near Kensington and Chelsea, Wandsworth rarely hold any surprises for us. Khutbah first. We photograph the qazi or imam addressing the couple and the families listening, so the album opens the ceremony the way the ceremony actually opened.

The signing of the nikah nama happens quietly and quickly, so we are in position beforehand, ready to catch the pen, the witnesses and the faces of the parents watching it all. Silence is a tool. Our shutters are near silent and our feet slower still, so the recitation and the dua carry through the room without a mechanical sound competing with them. Small details carry the story, the mahr written into the contract, the rings, the bride's jewellery, and we photograph them cleanly so their meaning is kept for good.

Hammersmith station serves the District, Piccadilly, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines, and the A4 runs through the borough. For pre-wedding and couple portraits, we love spots such as Bishop's Park, a riverside park beside the Thames with tree-lined walks, with Fulham Palace, the former residence of the Bishops of London close by for a striking backdrop.

The wakeel and the witnesses carrying the bride's acceptance between the two rooms is a detail we photograph carefully, so the album shows how the marriage was made. Ijab and qabool are spoken words rather than a spectacle, and often quietly. We frame tight and wait, because the whole marriage turns on those few syllables and the face that says them. Immediately after the ceremony comes a scattering of small, unplanned moments, a mother's hand on a shoulder, a brother's grin, and we stay in the room to gather them before the hall clears.

When the baraat reaches the gates, we photograph the dancing peaking, the family spilling out to receive it and the groom arriving to the loudest welcome of the day. Joota chupai produces the best comedy of the day, and it cannot be directed. Shoes vanish, prices are named, and we simply follow the bargaining until the groom finally gives in. A step back is where we work for the rukhsati, photographing the farewell without crowding it, so the weight of leaving home is held with the tenderness it deserves.
