Certain guests dislike appearing in a gallery, some families draw a firm line about the women's side, and every such preference is easy to honour when it reaches us a fortnight early and awkward at eleven o'clock. Collect the answers, send them over, and they are simply observed. Nobody should need to make that request twice, least of all in public.

From the mehndi to the rukhsati, in order
A mehndi evening brings the most saturated colour of the week and also its trickiest exposure, since the light is tinted on purpose while the hands stay motionless and everything around them does not. Close work suits it, ambient kept in, flash used sparingly if at all. A baraat runs the other way: outdoors, noisy, a crowd to be solved rather than a subject to be lit, and it is answered by picking a place along the route and letting it arrive.
Few ceremonies are as short as this one. Recitation puts the camera down, and it stays down. Photographically the weight sits on the nikah-nama moving round the table, on the witnesses bent over it, and on two faces in the half-second after the answer, which is exactly the frame a family asks about afterwards and the one an inattentive photographer loses. Evening is different work again, a walima being genuinely lightable. Rukhsati ends things, seldom cheerfully; that one gets shot from a distance and without comment.
