Many nikahs open with a recitation from the Qur'an, and we photograph the concentration on the faces of the two families as they listen. Prayers of blessing close the nikah, and we photograph the raised palms of the whole gathering, a wide and reverent frame of the community around the marriage. Leaning in over the register, the couple and the imam are caught in that concentrated moment when the marriage is written down.

At the walima the speeches and the shared meal take their place, and we photograph the reactions down the tables as much as the words spoken. Trays of mithai and dates move round the room after the good news, and we photograph the sharing, because the sweetness is part of the story. The mangni rings are exchanged with blessings and jokes in equal measure, and we photograph the whole moment without interrupting it.

We do, with care. The ijab-o-qabool, the giving and accepting of the proposal before witnesses, is the heart of the nikah, so we record it discreetly from a respectful distance. We never interrupt the imam or step into the ceremony; a longer lens lets us capture the moment of acceptance and the emotion on both faces without intruding on it.

Are you able to work without flash during the ceremony?+

Yes, and we prefer to. Flash is intrusive during a nikah and often unwelcome in a prayer hall, so we photograph the ceremony using available light, fast lenses and modern low-light cameras. The results look natural and warm, showing the room exactly as it was. We save any additional lighting for the walima in the evening, where it belongs.

Will you photograph our mangni or engagement in London?+

With pleasure. The mangni is a lovely, warm gathering, the exchange of rings, the sweets, the two families meeting properly, and it makes for relaxed, joyful pictures. Covering it early also means your relatives already know us by the time the nikah arrives, so everyone is at ease and the wedding day itself feels a good deal calmer.

It is brief and easy to miss, so we are in position and ready for it rather than reacting late.
