From mandir to banqueting hall, anywhere across London's boroughs

London is the capital, home to wedding venues across all its boroughs. Greater London's venues range from mandirs and community halls to marquees and country estates, across the City, Westminster, Camden and every other borough. During the jaimala we work quickly and from both sides, catching the moment the garlands go on and the cheer that rises from your guests the instant you are joined.

With a second photographer, one of us stays with the mandap and the other watches the guests, which helps in a big London room; Chelsea Old Town Hall's Main Hall, for example, holds up to 338 guests. For portraits we would work with what your venue offers: at Syon Park, for instance, the 19th-century glass-domed Great Conservatory, or at Royal Lancaster London the Italian Gardens it overlooks. Wherever the baraat sets off in London, we would walk alongside it, keeping pace with the drums and the dancing while leaving the family clear to lead the way in.

A Hindu wedding in London is rarely one event. Gujarati, Punjabi, North and South Indian families each have their own order of rituals, and the photography is planned around yours rather than a fixed package.

In the days before

The ganesh puja and grah shanti, usually at home with close family.
The mameru, the pithi or haldi, and the mehndi.
The sangeet or garba night, often in a hall with a stage and coloured lighting.

On the wedding day

The baraat and the welcome at the door.
The mandap ceremony: jaimala, kanyadaan, hasta milap, the pheras and the saptapadi, then the sindoor and the mangalsutra.

When the aashirwad begins and the elders come forward, we move gently between them, photographing each blessing and the rice falling as your married life is welcomed by the whole family. The agni burns at the centre of everything, and we keep it alive in the pictures through the pheras, reading the smoke and the light so the fire never washes out. We hold close for the mangalsutra and the sindoor, photographing the hands, the thread and the quiet intensity of the moment your marriage is marked before your families.

The reception speeches always bring out the best stories, and we photograph the room's reaction, the laughter rolling through the tables and the pride on the faces of your parents. The garba and raas can run for hours, and we pace ourselves with it, photographing the shifting circles and the colour so the last dance looks as alive as the first. Before the pheras

The baraat and the arrival at the mandap

Before the pheras there is the baraat: one family arriving in procession with music and dancing, often a car or a horse at the front, and the welcome at the venue door before anyone reaches the mandap. It is the part of a Hindu wedding that guests film on their phones, and it is over in minutes, so it is planned with the venue and the family first.

How do you handle fast movement at the sangeet performances?+

We anticipate it. Sangeet dances move quickly under stage lighting, so we plan ahead. Where we can, we watch a rehearsal, stand ready for the lifts and the reactions, and use lenses that hold focus in the low, coloured light of an evening hall. The result is lively pictures of the performers and of the family cheering from the tables.

What makes a fine-art album different from a standard photo book?+

Think heirloom versus throwaway. Fine-art albums use archival-grade papers, richer print quality and craftsmanship designed to last generations, unlike the disposable feel of an off-the-shelf photo book. Because the pages lie perfectly flat, a whole mandap or baraat scene can stretch across a spread without disappearing into the centre. Families keep these and hand them down; they do not yellow and get forgotten.

Can you photograph a garba or raas night in London?+

Yes, garba and raas nights are a highlight for couples. The swirl of colour, the dandiya sticks and the sheer movement suit our documentary approach. We shoot low and among the dancing to keep the energy alive, then step out for the wider frames that show the whole floor in motion.

Can you photograph a mixed-faith Hindu wedding in London?+

Yes, fusion weddings are welcome. Fusion weddings might pair Hindu rituals with a civil ceremony, a church blessing or another faith's traditions across one or two days. We research the running order carefully, speak with both officiants and cover each element with equal respect so the whole story reads as one.

Is a Hindu wedding legal in the UK?+

In England and Wales a religious ceremony is legally binding only if it takes place in a building registered for marriages, with a registrar or an authorised person present. Many temples are not registered, and hotels and halls cannot host a legal religious ceremony, so many couples also marry at a register office. Your local register office can confirm, and we photograph the civil ceremony too.

Do you photograph Gujarati and South Indian Hindu weddings?+

Yes. The rituals and their order differ between Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil and other traditions, so your running order is gone through with you and your priest before the day, rather than working from a generic list.
