Relaxed portrait sessions in Hammersmith and Fulham

We take portrait bookings right across Hammersmith and Fulham, and cover Shepherd's Bush, Barons Court and Chiswick on the same terms. Outdoors is what we would suggest first here, with Bishop's Park the ground worth heading for, and the Northwood studio held back for weather, for plain-background work, and for people who dislike being watched in a public park.

The craft point worth raising early is timing. Beside open water the sun stays usable far later in the day than it does hemmed in by buildings, so we book riverside sittings towards the end of the afternoon and avoid the middle of a bright summer day entirely.

Twenty-five years behind the lens

Reassuringly experienced portrait photography

We meet at whichever gate suits you, walk while we talk, and start photographing once the camera has stopped being the point. Roughly an hour of that is actual shooting, across two or three spots between the shaded walks and the open bank.

Afterwards a private gallery arrives with the edited set. You choose what you want finished, and finishing means the temporary things go and the face stays as it is. Every file comes twice, once sized for screens and once big enough to print.

Portrait Photographer in Hammersmith and Fulham, FAQs

You receive a gallery of carefully edited portraits to choose your favourites from. From there you can order fine prints, framed pieces, canvases and hand-finished albums, or simply take the digital images. Editing is natural and light, so you always look like yourself at your best. Hammersmith and Fulham is easy to reach: Hammersmith station serves the District, Piccadilly, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines, and the A4 runs through the borough.

Allow about ninety minutes from meeting to finishing, of which perhaps an hour is photography. In Bishop's Park a good part of that is walking between the shaded tree-lined stretches and the open bank, because the two give quite different light and a set is stronger for having both. Add whatever your own journey needs on top. Studio sittings in Northwood run shorter, since nothing has to be walked to.

Yes. We take bookings across Hammersmith and Fulham and travel to you rather than asking you to come out to Northwood. Bishop's Park is the location we would put forward first, for its firm walks and the open sky over the water. Shepherd's Bush, Barons Court and Chiswick are covered on identical terms, so a spot just over the Hammersmith and Fulham boundary is no complication at all.

The studio is The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6. For a Hammersmith and Fulham portrait the address rarely comes into it, because we travel to you and work outdoors. It earns its place in two situations: weather that refuses to settle, and a portrait that needs a plain background and light we control instead of a park. Either can be decided in the same week as the sitting.

Yes, please bring a few. A handful of outfit changes brings real variety to your Hammersmith and Fulham portraits, and there is time set aside for them within the sitting. We are glad to advise ahead on what photographs well, and how colours and styles react to the studio lighting.

Bishop's Park sits on the bank of a tidal river, which makes it a different proposition from an inland park with the same trees and paths. The water is a break in the built line, so an unobstructed panel of sky runs along one whole side of the park, and on a grey day it behaves like one very large soft light. Stand someone back from the wall with the river to one side and the light arrives broad and directional at once, a combination open lawns never give. The surface adds a second thing: when the sky is bright the water throws part of it back upwards, and that upward return is what lifts the shadow under the brow and along the jaw. It weakens as soon as wind chops the surface, so a still grey morning treats a face better than a bright blustery one. The tree-lined walks are the counterweight. They run back from the bank, and in high summer hold deep shade while the bank stays open and bright, so contrast changes by walking a short way inland rather than by moving location. In winter the bare branches let the walks brighten and the two grounds converge. Clothing follows from the background: an open river reads pale and restless behind a figure, so mid-tones hold shape where white does not, and anything loose and light will move. Wind along open water is the one thing no amount of retouching puts right. Fulham Palace is a managed historic site; permission for a booked sitting on ground of that sort is arranged with the site, never assumed.
