Victoria Park is the ground most Hackney sittings get built around, and its age matters more than its size. Trees that old are fully grown, so the shade along a lawn edge arrives as a hard boundary instead of the broken dapple that young planting gives. Stand somebody half in and half out of it and a bright stripe crosses one cheek, and no amount of editing takes that out convincingly. Step right inside the boundary and turn the face back out towards the grass, and the lawn becomes the light source, sending an even wash upwards with no hot edge on it anywhere. The lakes change what sits behind a head rather than what falls on it. Water registers as one large plain area from any distance, so it empties a background out completely, which is precisely the opposite of what the borough's streets do. Independent shopfronts, market stalls and painted frontages are all detail at head height, and detail at head height keeps dragging the eye around the frame. If that texture is what you want, it belongs a long way back and thrown out of focus rather than sitting behind a shoulder. The Hackney Empire is the extreme case worth naming: an ornate Edwardian frontage is a surface that beats a human face at close range every time, so we would keep it at distance if it features at all. Clothing then follows from whichever background has won. Pale grey and white sink straight into open water, so mid tones hold their edge better there, while a loud painted street asks for plain, unpatterned cloth.
