The trade here is largely independent, which changes commercial photography more than the subject matter does. So a Hackney visit is built around trading hours rather than around light, and the pictures are taken either side of opening. The lighting problem in these rooms is consistent and fixable. A shopfront window is doing most of the work and it is a cold, blue-ish source coloured further by whatever sits in the display and by the street outside, while the bulbs overhead are warm. Two colours in one frame is what makes a photograph of a small shop look amateur: faces go orange where the window does not reach, and the stock reads two different shades along one shelf. We either overpower the overheads or match our own light to them, and settle that before the first frame rather than trying to repair it afterwards. Photographing a team consistently is the other common need, and independent businesses are the hardest case because everybody is rarely in on the same day. We note the light positions, the distance and the settings used, so that somebody photographed weeks later still belongs beside the rest and the finished page reads as one visit. The arts and music side of the borough asks for the same discipline applied to rooms and equipment rather than to people.
