Three lines converging on one station makes an Ealing team photograph a scheduling problem before it is a lighting one. Staff arrive from opposite directions at different hours, and a company that tries to gather everybody into one room at one time usually loses two or three people to a late train and ends up with a set that has to be patched later from a different day. The better method inverts it. One position goes up in the morning, the floor is marked, and the light is left untouched until evening, so people come through in ones and twos between their own commitments and nothing about the setup has moved between the first face and the last. Inside the premises themselves the recurring problem is mixed light. A room served by a window on one wall and a fitting overhead carries two colours and two directions at once, and left alone it drops the eyes into shade and greys the skin. We bring a source of our own strong enough to overrule both, then let the window do the one thing it is good at, which is softening the darker cheek. A borough long known as a suburb tends to be photographed for its people and its rooms rather than for anything on a production line, and a room is worth photographing twice: once empty, where the architecture is the subject, and once with somebody working in it, where the room is only the setting. The two versions end up used in different places.
