A sitting is booked for a fixed window and runs as a short circuit rather than from one spot, which yields four or five distinct backgrounds without a long walk for anybody. The screen gets turned round early, while there is still time to change direction.
Editing covers exposure, skin tone and whatever sits distractingly behind a head. Faces are not reshaped. The finished pictures arrive small enough for a phone and large enough to print, and the originals stay with us if more are wanted afterwards.

Walpole Park is arranged rather than scattered, and that one difference decides where a portrait works in Ealing. The park exists as the setting for a house, Pitzhanger Manor, and grounds attached to a house get their hedges, avenues and beds laid out to a design, which the listing then holds in place for decades. For a portrait this counts for far more than acreage does. A clipped hedge is a continuous wall of a single tone with no gaps of sky punched through it, so the ground behind a head stays at one brightness and the exposure that suits a face suits everything behind it as well. A scattered tree line does the opposite: bright holes open between the trunks, the eye finds those before it finds the face, and no amount of editing repairs it properly. Structure also settles what changes and what does not. Yew, box and gravel look much the same in February as in August, and only the planting in the beds turns over, so the question in any given month is not whether the park looks its best but which way the light is running. Late in the day the sun travels along an avenue instead of across it, and someone standing in the length of one is lit from the front rather than from a single edge. Clothing follows from all that. Against dark evergreen, black merges and a head appears to float free of a body, while white becomes the first thing the eye lands on. Mid tones and any visible weave keep their edge.

Studio sessions for Ealing
If you would rather sit in the studio, it is at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 1NU, around 8 miles from Ealing. It is where booked portrait sittings take place, and it also handles passport and ID photos, printing, framing, restoration and digitising. The studio opens Monday to Saturday from 10:30 to 18:00 and on Sunday from 13:00 to 18:00.
