A meeting place at one of the park entrances gets fixed first, then we work roughly an hour on foot, shifting across a handful of positions instead of staying rooted to one. Frames appear on a laptop while the session is still running, so you already know what exists before we part company.
Editing removes a blemish that will not exist next month and leaves everything permanent exactly as it is. Finished files arrive in two forms, one heavy enough to print properly and one light enough to drop straight into a profile.

Relaxed direction, professional lighting
We begin with a few safe, classic frames and then move to more natural ones once you are comfortable. An actor's sitting calls for its own style of direction. Rather than asking for a smile, we give you a thought to hold, because casting directors read the eyes first.

- St George the Martyr on Borough High Street, built in 1734-36 by John Price in red brick and Portland stone, is Grade II* listed and has an 1897 ceiling by Basil Champneys showing cherubs breaking through a clouded sky. 1
- Potters Fields Park lies on the south bank of the Thames between City Hall and Tower Bridge, and it reopened in April 2007 after a major refurbishment. 2
- Mint Street Park on Mint Street in Borough (SE1) has an adventure play facility, a multi-use games area and an outdoor gym. 3
- Red Cross Garden in Borough was built with its neighbouring cottages in 1886 to designs by Octavia Hill, the social reformer and National Trust co-founder, and after Bankside Open Spaces Trust restored its Victorian layout it was reopened by the Princess Royal in 2006. 4

Give us the headcount at booking, because eight people need a different background and a different position from three. Southwark Park in Rotherhithe suits a sitting in this borough, and the reason is how a Victorian park was laid out rather than how big it is. It was built as a run of separate set pieces, a lake in one place and a rose garden in another, so two quite unlike backgrounds sit inside a single short walk. A sitting that has stalled in front of planting can simply carry on at the water, and nobody gets back into a car to do it. The rose garden deserves honesty. It is a background for the weeks the roses are up, and outside those weeks it is a bed of cut stems photographing as clutter behind a head. Book it in season or use something else. Open water is the steadier choice, since it reads as a smooth pale field behind the shoulders in February as readily as in June. Clothing follows from whatever ends up behind you, and on a riverfront of historic buildings that is worth deciding early. White beside a weathered wall drags attention straight off the face, and a dense black jacket sinks into that wall until the shoulders vanish. Anything sitting between those two extremes survives both. The Bankside riverfront, with Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe along it, makes a strong background at a genuine cost: an open embankment offers no canopy at all, which on a bright afternoon leaves nowhere to step into shade and a face lit hard from straight overhead. Cloud is not a disappointment on that stretch of river. It is the condition the place was waiting for.
