Brockwell Park is the practical ground for a Lambeth sitting, and where it sits matters more than how big it is. It lies near Herne Hill and Brixton, in the southern half of a borough that runs the whole way up to Waterloo, so for some sitters it is the local park and for others it is a real journey across the borough. That changes how a booking gets built. If you are travelling to reach it, the park becomes the entire location and we start early, while there is still empty ground to photograph across; if it is your own park, we can afford to be fussy about the hour and wait for the evening. Overhead sun is what a sitting here has to be planned against. At midday the light arrives from straight above, the brow shades the eyes and everybody gains ten years. Early and late it comes across the grass instead of down onto it, and a face turned slightly towards it keeps both eyes open and lit. Exposure is the other decision, and given how mixed the borough is, not a minor one. Deeper skin returns less light to the camera, so a meter left to its own devices lifts the whole frame and burns out the sky behind. We expose for the face and let the background land where it lands. Saturated colour holds up against summer green; bright white is worth leaving in the wardrobe on a clear day. And the borough's famous building is the Archbishop of Canterbury's London home, which makes it somebody's house rather than a backdrop.
