A Hindu ceremony in a hired hall happens while the sun sits at its highest, so the strongest light in the building comes through glass and the weakest comes off ceiling fittings that do unkind things to skin. Those two sources rarely agree with one another. Our opening job anywhere like that is to establish from which side daylight arrives, and the question of where the mandap will face is best asked with that already known, since a structure once raised will not be moved again.

Ask early who is bringing the four uprights and at what hour they go up. A mandap assembled by eight leaves an hour to test the room with nobody in it; one assembled at eleven does not. The baraat outside is a separate problem, since a procession that halts for photographs is halting traffic as well. We photograph it while it moves, from in front and low, and let it find its own tempo.

Under the mandap in Lambeth

Agni is both the difficulty and the reward. A live flame under the canopy indoors throws warm light upward onto faces already lit cool from a window, and the two cannot share one white balance setting. We meter on the flame and correct everything else to suit, never the reverse, because fire is the single element nobody can stage twice. Smoke drifting up through a shaft of daylight is worth the trouble it gives a lens, though it flattens contrast, so frames either side of the havan come out cleaner than those from inside it.

There are seven pheras and from one position they look identical. We move between them, so that seven circuits do not yield seven near identical frames: low down for the first, the parents' reaction on the third, then hands and feet for the seventh. Sindoor and the mangalsutra take a few seconds apiece and offer no second attempt. Being in position before the priest reaches them is a matter of listening to the room, not of luck.

From the first hands being dressed to the last car pulling away, yes. We would rather book one continuous stretch than split the day into blocks, because the quiet gaps between events hold half the pictures worth having.
