Two seconds is all the varmala gives you. Garlands go up, arms go up, and quite often the couple go up too on the shoulders of cousins. Nobody rehearses it and nothing is repeated, so the frame gets settled beforehand: one of us fixed low at the front, the other high and behind the family, both exposed for the room already instead of adjusting while it happens. A photographer still walking when the garlands lift has no picture at all.

The pheras present the opposite difficulty. Seven passes around one flame yield seven photographs differing in nothing at all, unless position changes each time. We move around the structure between rounds, kneel on one, shoot through the posts on another, and give at least two circuits to the watching mothers and grandmothers rather than the couple. Gestures at hand height, kanyadaan among them, get blocked by whichever post is nearest, so that side is chosen at the start and never renegotiated.
