A Hindu ceremony in Merton is usually a daylight job with a roof over it, and most of the plan follows from that. Windows sit behind the guests; the flame burns low at the centre; the colour of each is nowhere near the colour of the other. We meter for fire and let the window land where it lands. Sindoor is finished before most people have raised their heads. No repeat exists, no second attempt, and hands tend to be in the way, so focus goes to the parting in advance and the crop ends tighter than we would otherwise pick. Walking the fire poses the reverse problem: identical geometry, repeated, and a still photographer hands you one frame printed several times over. So height changes, side changes, focal length changes, pass by pass.
