Merton and nearby
You get a start time, a place to meet and an agreed plan for what happens if the sky turns. Most of the hour goes on moving between two or three positions instead of standing in one, and we show you frames on the camera as we work, so anything you are unhappy about is dealt with there and then.
Afterwards you receive the edited pictures in colour, and in mono where a frame calls for it, supplied at print size and at web size. Retouching stays limited to whatever would not be there next week.

What we offer
Outdoor sittings on Wimbledon Common, planned around the hour rather than the day, with the Northwood studio in reserve.
Individuals, couples, graduations and milestone portraits, all worked the same way and booked by session length.
A wardrobe note sent before the day, so nobody arrives in the one colour the ground will swallow.
Local and experienced
Every sitting begins with one safe, straightforward frame in the bag. Once that is secured there is room to try low key lighting or a tighter crop without any risk. We are patient with children and older sitters alike, and shape the pace of the session around whoever is in front of us.
The natural-light studio on The Broadway in Northwood is a daylight room, so window-lit portraits are possible without stepping outside or losing control of the background. Actor and model portfolios include a spread of looks and expressions, from clean commercial frames to characterful ones.

Good to know
Yes, and it is one of the easier things to do well in Merton. Two people need distance behind them rather than a pretty backdrop, and the open ground of Wimbledon Common lets us stand a long way back with a longer lens, which keeps both faces the same size and stops the nearer one dominating. Bring a change of top between you, since matching exactly rarely works.
Not much is needed. The one thing worth getting right is the hour, because a Merton sitting is normally booked for the last part of the afternoon and the light does not wait; twenty minutes late costs the best of it. Name the entrance you would use and that is where we will be waiting, rather than sending you hunting across open ground. Eat something first.
Certainly. Many of our Merton sessions blend individual images with a few couple or group shots, and folding that into the time is easy. Just tell us in advance who will be coming along, so we can plan the lighting and looks to flatter everyone present.
The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6. For a Merton portrait it is an option rather than the default, because most sittings here happen outdoors and we come to you. The studio earns its keep when weather has made open ground pointless, when somebody cannot manage uneven footing, or when the picture needs a controlled background and a light we set instead of the sky.
Bring two options rather than deciding at home, since we can see on the camera which one is working and swap. Dress for standing still outdoors: open ground in Merton offers no shelter, and cold reaches the face within ten minutes of stopping. Skip logos and large prints, and wear shoes you are happy to walk on wet grass in. Comfort shows more than the outfit does.
Serving Merton
Merton is well within our travel area. It sits close to Wandsworth and Sutton, which we cover too. We cover Merton and the wider London area for portrait photography, on location or in the studio, with no local travel charge.
A south-west London borough home to Wimbledon and its world-famous tennis championships. Served by Wimbledon station on South Western Railway, the District line and Tramlink, plus the Morden terminus of the Northern line. For on-location sessions we often head to spots such as Wimbledon Common, close to the well-known The All England Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon.

Wimbledon Common is where a Merton sitting should start, and what matters about open common ground is that the sky is doing all of the work. Nothing throws light back up under the brow, and nothing overhead filters it, so the hour you pick is the entire lighting plan. Sun directly above hollows the sockets and lays a hard edge under the nose and jaw. The same ground late in the afternoon takes the light sideways and warm, and that is what separates a face reading tired from a face reading awake. Flat cloud is not the problem people expect it to be. It treats skin kindly, though it also kills the ground to a single tone, which shifts the decision from whether to come out to what to put on. Clothing follows from whatever stands behind you. For most of the year that is green and dry brown, so mid greens, olive and soft browns drop you into the same tonal band as the ground and the portrait quietly loses its subject. Navy, charcoal, cream and a strong red all cut away from it. Pattern is the second trap, because fine checks and narrow stripes fizz at the size the picture will actually be looked at. Season inverts all of this. By deep winter the grass has gone pale and the sun stays low all day, so mid tones that failed in June sit well, while black flattens to a shape with no detail left in it.

How it works
We travel to Merton rather than asking you to travel to us. On-location coverage suits weddings, corporate events, team headshots and product shoots, and we bring whatever lighting the space needs. The Northwood studio is available too if you prefer it.
