Nothing throws light back up under the brow, and nothing overhead filters it, so the hour you pick is the entire lighting plan. Sun directly above hollows the sockets and lays a hard edge under the nose and jaw. Season inverts all of this. By deep winter the grass has gone pale and the sun stays low all day, so mid tones that failed in June sit well, while black flattens to a shape with no detail left in it.
