Bring one thing you already like wearing and a second in a deeper shade. Nonsuch Park is green for three seasons out of four and the mansion front is busy with carving, so a plain mid to dark top holds up against either, while white glares in open sun. Skip narrow stripes and small checks; they turn to mush at any distance. Footwear that copes with wet grass matters more than the outfit.

The Gothic Revival front of Nonsuch Mansion is the most tempting background in Sutton and also the likeliest to spoil a portrait, and the culprit is carved detail. Ornament, pointed openings and a busy roofline all sit at roughly the tonal weight of a face, so a head placed a few paces out from the wall ends up competing with it. Two approaches work and the middle ground does not. Either close in with a long lens until the ornament blurs into soft shapes and reads as surface, or walk right back and let the house be a whole building with the sitter small and deliberate in front of it. Half a facade, recognisable but chopped, is where most pictures of that mansion end up. Clothing follows from which of those you choose. What a carved facade demands is contrast without noise: one plain tone, clearly apart from whatever the wall behind you turns out to be, because a face competing with masonry and with a patterned shirt loses twice. The 270 acres of Nonsuch Park exist so that we can move rather than wait, which counts most in high summer, when open grass is punishing from late morning onwards and the sensible move is under the tree line at the park edges. Winter reverses it. The ground is drab, but low light runs all day, it rakes across the mansion and finally shows the carving as carving, and a January sitting can start mid morning without anybody standing about waiting for the sun to behave.
